BCMA

Congratulations Sylvia!

You have inspired me. No, not to sit for my BCMA, that may come later...

I'm hitting my books, Harris, Dirr, Sinclair et al with Dakota College's online study program to get the most out of them. Have been in contact with Bob Underwood, enrollment for classes will be initiated forthwith.

Thanks Sylvia, and again, well done!

Eric, glad to hear it!!! Give 'em heck, as they say. Do not be afraid to be annoyingly persistent with Bob and questions. I actually prefer to call it enduringly conscientious, but that may be subject to personal point of view.

I learned a tremendous amount from my classes with Bob. But remember, you only get out what you put into them.

I am taking the Urban Forestry Skills class with Bob even as we speak and will be able to finish up the diploma program this fall.

Good luck and enjoy!!

Curtis, unfortunately, I believe you have me confused with someone else. (More's the pity.) I have never been to the Internationals, am 5 ft tall, 100 lbs and decidely unGodlike.

But thank you anyway!!

Although there are a number of women BCMAs the field is dominated by the male of the species. Would that be androdioecious? (A bit of arbor humor...)

Senones, thanks. As for tips? Study. Then study some more.

The last week of concentrated study time for me was going over the BMPs and the Compendium set. But it all depends on where your "weak" spots are or what you feel needs the most work.

Probably the best tip I feel I could give is: just answer the question...don't read anything into it, just answer it.

Sylvia

thank you. less than one week to go. i had a feeling you would say study. i do like your advice to "just answer the question". another BCMA i know told me something similar: "just read the question". It is my understanding that it is all application. We'll see, right?

The BCMA exam builds on the basic information you have obtained through study, experience and application.

It requires you to know your subject matter well enough to apply all your knowledge. If you are given a list of circumstances, does your mind automatically start a process that ultimately tells you what is going on...good, bad or indifferent?

As you know, in life there are many times when the "perfect" option is simply not available to you. So what is the "best" option. NOT what would you do if you could change the circumstances, start from the beginning and be on hand every step of the way. THAT is simply not an option. But unfortunately, many times, when we are taking an exam or answering a question for a client, that is where our mind goes.

As in real life, it doesn't do your client any good for you to tell them what the perfect soil, with the perfect tree, planted in the perfect spot in the perfect manner and cared for in an optimal way. Their tree and circumstance aren't perfect or you wouldn't be standing there talking to them.

The CA exam asks you basic questions where you can answer these point blank questions. The BCMA wants you to have the knowledge to extrapolate and come up with the best solution for the imperfect, but real life, situation.

So don't change the circumstances to suit what you would LIKE to say, answer the question they are asking you in the context that it is expressed.

That sounds like advice i can take to the bank. That also seems to be the consensus. if memory serves me correctly, the CA test had questions with more than one possible answer. that seems to go back to what you were saying. to answer the question with the best possible answer, not the perfect one. I consider myself systematic, so i am optimistic. i also plan on going back to the scenario for all of the questions and to also use that client/plant/stress/sympton circle from that phc book as a guideline to answer each question. i feel good about it. time will tell.thanks for the encouragement. a true professional.
