Balancers

I've been splicing hollow braid since 1987, double braid since 1988, 16 strand since Safety Blue braid came out, 3 strand for 44 years. I've spliced True Blue (attached)
There are several splicing manuals on the market. Google 'rope splicing manuals'.
Dyneema is a 'class 2' fiber and has a 3 fid bury. Class 1 hollow braids are a much better way to start splicing. If used for 'life support', always have an experienced splicer check it out by hand, not by pictures.
Even when lifting logs over structures (homes, sheds, garages), you have to have complete confidence in your splices.

Don't look like those things have seen much action.

Done my fair share of crane jobs, close to 10000.

I reckon, Old dirty,as abrasive as he is, is spot on.

No need to over complicate things.

Never used more than 2 points of attachment and 90% would be with 1 point of attachment, and this is always using chains.

Number 1 rule,Make sure you are bottom heavy and back cut every thing, cut behind the weight BUTT CUT SLOWLY SO YOU CAN READ WHERE THE LOAD IS SHIFTING SO YOU CAN ADJUST YOUR CUT BEFORE YOU GET BAR PINCHED.

Worked on the most delicate jobs, too.

Long horizontal limbs...clear some space above first then attach chain (maybe two),making sure it is butt heavy. Under jib the crane, put a top scarf where you are cutting and make sure the crane op ropes up as you under cut,but
ALWAYS CUT SLOW AND READ WHAT THE GAP TELLS YOU AND TELL THE CRANE OP TO WINCH UP AS YOU UNDERCUT

You my friend are correct, and much to the dismay of many, crane work is not that complex and it is much easier than always woring the tree with ropes. Especially if you factor in "the crane".

As you point out be aware of the situation don't get greedy and work as ONE..

Very precise explaination...

10,000 huh? You must be doing one right now lol.

Chains? Uggh. Heavy and hard to detect "weakest link in chain" while being time consuming looking for one.

Generalizations are hard to make on cuts in td's let alone throw a crane into the mix. But if a straight up leader towards the crane...Make a face cut half way into the stem towards the boom, then kick the throttle in the as s and put the finishing cut exactly into the face cut and.... bam....bye bye. No tiptoeing nec. The saw will NOT get pinched.

Only one hook up needed most times. No "balancers".

I was wondering when you were going to add your useless 2cents to another useless spider sling thread, butt-jamin.

Guess what I'm doing right now. That's right . I'm running the crane with a rookie climber with only 2 slings on the hook. He doing just fine finding balance point rigging as well.

Shouldn't you be watching what you're doing, especially with a rookie on the hook? Are you really THAT good that you can be posting on treebuzz on yer smart phone WHILE you're operating the crane?!

Yup. Wish i had that tablet thing or iPad though. That would be sweet.

Why, what do you do? Running crane gets pretty boring at times .....

Justin 'aint all bad. I met ODB and he's cool in person. I know he gets a bit outt line online, but don't we all at times? I have been giving Rich H a good lashing lately and I love the guy! (not in the blue oyster way Justin!)

Having extreme personalities and views makes it easier to find the mean.

Ol dirty's version of online funny is more like "I was beat mercilessly as a child, crushing my dreams forever, so I must show everyone I could beat them mercilessly while balancing a 5k pick with a steel choker" kind of funny.

I'm sure he's great in person though.
