Avant 420 w/Branch Manager Grapple

After looking for over a year I settled on the above and have about a month under my belt using it. Thought I'd share some of my experiences to help anyone else making the same decision. I made a short video of dragging some brush and loading the machine.

I don't live in the city, which is where I do most of my work so I needed to be able to carry the Avant on the truck and still carry a full load of debris. I load the Avant on a 99' F450 (15k GVWR). With tools and the mini I have just under 2,000 lbs left for tongue weight.

The Avant has been great and very simple to operate. I can pick up as much brush as the BMG can handle, which is plenty. Large trunk sections obviously have to be cut smaller. But on a job where you have to rig the stem down you are already cutting it small enough. I did have a warrantee issue but Avant and my local dealer (Tool Shack) were great.

The BMG is without a doubt the backbone of this combination. Very high quality. I spoke with Dave Norgaard at TNE several times and that was very helpful. Really Dave's customer service was a big reason why I wanted to write this review. I can't say enough good things about the Branch Manager Grapple.

This equipment significantly reduces the work of moving and loading brush and logs. It easily replaces 2 brush draggers.

Like the lights. And the kid asking whether or not to turn the camera off. Good stuff!

The 420 is a very handy machine compared to a mini given its price point, drive speed, and lift height.

We (Dave and I) had a 420 down here for shooting videos and giving demos. I sold that one and we have a 528 coming down for a similar treatment.

That's good to see. I was thinking of the 528 for lifting capacity. But being able to load the shorter 420 sideways sure would be nice.

Thanks for making and putting up the video.

One suggestion; when driving around, and in general, keep the arm/grapple/load as low as practical to lower the CoG and reduce the chance of tipping. Mainly talking about driving around with the boom horizontal and the grapple dangling.

nice! i like the setup you've got there. i really like my gehl articulating loader. its amazing to me that i am the only tree service in town with one. Everyone else is still using skid and track loaders. It still can't replace a mini loader though. My vermeer minis are my work horses.

Boom down and grapple closed and dangling means its almost impossible to bang the grapple, no matter how jerky, unless you playing tank commander bombing over craters.

I had to check my BMG today. My "L hitch tube" can't fit my grapple your way, only into the 'vertical when stowed' square tube between the bollard and heel-plate.
