Ash drop

Thanks for sharing all the informational posts. I am learning everyday in this field of work and that's why I love it. These sites are a learning tool that other's all over the world can contribute to and learn from. Too bad we just can't keep the TOOLS out of the equation.

If a hinge is going to fail on a side leaner it will fail at the start of the fall. Once it's pointed in the right direction if it can make it past 1-2 o'clock it's balance has changed enough for it to have gravity pull it forward instead of sideways(most of the time). So the notch used in Jomoco's situation didn't hurt anything (perhaps?) and it's good to have as much control as possible til it's on the ground but it didn't save the mansion over a 90 degree v face.

I totally agree with your first sentence Boreality. However a side lean is only treacherous to deal with in terms of felling it with a pull line if you can't pull it 180 degrees opposite the lean. Which I was able to do with that hollow Coulter pine. I was pulling it exactly 180 degrees opposite it's lean over the mansion.

If you are saying a boxcut cannot hold to a stump over 90 degrees plus of travel(when falling a conifer) however? I'll politely say....baloney.

jomoco

Well that would be a back lean not a side lean then. My mistake.

I didn't say the box cut couldn't hold past 90 but a 90 degree v does the same thing is what I was getting at. My (maybe?) was based on what makes a stronger hinge? Level with a v's apex or the apex plus 5 inches of a thin piece of wood. Because that's all you end up with once the fall begins and the back fibers of a thick hinge pop. The story's told on every cut stump.

I like to just make my two notch cuts about an inch apart vertically and split the piece out depending on the size of the tree and how brittle the species is. The problem with the box cut that I have found is as the tree is falling its easy for one side of the hinge to split away from the stump more then the other obviously causing the shot to sway. It's nice to have a tall hinge for flex but to tall can be bad.

I just got back from New Orleans.. only had a chance to quickly skim the new posts.. nice to see Jomoco's take on the Graeme's video.. Its pretty clear that he was using deep notches to put the hinge back behind the center of gravity, thus allowing him to drop those big bits safely without a pull line.. When you are up that high, a pull line costs a lot of time..

However to say that using the same technique in felling cuts is "dangerous" (or whatever he said) makes no sense.. All this arguing is tiresome, so let it go.. cut em however you think is best

Does anyone agree that there is a significant gap in knowledge in the industry in this area?

Hey Rickey,

What you did was pretty good. Almost mundane!!??

The tree was straight up and down!

You had a pull line on it (with a diversion), you removed the picket fence underneath it, you pre tensioned the pull line, then you scarfed it in the appropiate direction, then back cut it, and then you showed all the holding wood in the scarf!!??

Why is everyone carrying on so much??

With a difficult fell you would def be more concerned about scarf size and I personally would'nt move to far from 1/3 diameter scarf (cause I know it works).

I bet all of the people who diss'ed this clip, would carry 3/4 of what they own on their harness every time they climb, and never use it(if you actually climb!) !

The same people would prob buy more tree gear on the internet than they need, watch youtube clips on tree work and combine that with what little bit of knowledge they have learnt in the industry, and then all of a sudden become tree experts.....

Urban felling isn't for everyone. With climbing, bucket trucks and cranes it doesn't need to be done. It's a dangerous shortcut that some companies have a policy against. The risks are huge and often the time saved trivial. There are ways to minimize the risk but it may be one of those techniques that needs practicing. Hopefully not in someone's yard but in the forest. If you can't practice technical felling just don't do it. How many thousands of drops do you think an expert logger has done? And he'd probably tell you he's still learning something new every day.

Oh that's brilliant..

Let's not bother using our energy to learn how to fall tree, cause we have ropes, saddles and bucket trucks.. Learning how to make a proper notch and back cut is a "shortcut" and dangerous at that huh?

And I quote Daniel Murphy...

99+% of the pro arborists in the USA have no clue.. And the vast majority of people that teach arboriculture don't know. I'd bet money that Sharon Lily and David Gerstenberger have no clue and I'd be surprise if anyone at asplund or davey could tell us.. It'd be fun to see if any of those judges running in with their rulers could tell you why..

This industry is totally in the dark.. the overwhelming majority don't have a clue about the reasons.. they just fall trees the way they were told (and most of them, at least around here, pretty much suck at it)..

This one is up there with Joshua's rant. ...And I thought we were just drunk low-lifes!

Hey Chopper I here you there. The tree had a bit of a side weight and the wind was at about 30km/h which wasn't a huge factor. Was thinking it would have been nice just to notch it and drop it with a wedge but the wind dismissed this. Alot of talk but no show. There's a saying I like " Put up or shut up" that goes for all you loud mouth chumps out there. Ever in the Niagara area give me a call, I'll buy dinner. So dinner and a show. I guarantee you'll shut the #$@# up. Hey Daniel do yourself a favour and don't say YOU gave me too much credit. Guess what bud news flash NOBODY GIVE a Boat load of catpiss what you think. Moron. Who shakes a woman's hand like that? Just terrible. Change your hair cut and the avatar and then get some class. Jerk off! Coming on here thinking your it, bud work with ten times better than you'll ever be.
