ASCENDED, CROLL, PANTIN

Thank you very much for posting the pictures, Norm!!! Very nice system, indeed! What chest harness are you using? Is it Petzl, too?

Josh,

The CMI foot ascender has it's fans because it locks onto the rope and won't kick out. But...I think MORE climbers like the Pantin because it can be left on for the rest of the climb...descent and drive to lunch too!

The kit seems a bit expensive especially since it includes an F8 which isn't a great tool for descent.

yeah i dont want the screw links and crap. i can buy those here at the hardware store. im gonna order just the meat and potatoes of the system. im buying a right hand ascender, right foot pantin, 60 inch loop runner for a foot loop, 24 inch loop runner for saddle attachment.
thats all i need if im running my climbing hitch in between the pantin and handeled ascender right? or do i need to back up the cam on the ascender with something?

How many attachments to the climbing rope are 'normal'? One hitch?

There's nothing wrong with backing up but this should be thought out and not blindly followed. If you're worried about your upper ascender failing consider using a different system. I see MANY climbers using some confabulated 'backup' above their upper/handled ascender without a biner through the upper hole of the HA. This is a simple safety precaution that should be incorporated BEFORE considering some backup.

If you have a chest/lower ascender then you already are attached twice. What would trigger the failure of your upper? If you used a hitch for your upper would you use two? No one does as far as I've seen. If there is a fear of a failure then don't follow that scheme by adding on piles and piles of 'backups'...change the system.

good point tom. so my idea is, keeping my main saddle prussik on the center alng with the rest of the system attached. this way when i climb to the anchor knot on the branch. i can simply lanyard in, untie the knot and set up my carabiner to run my working Ddrt split tail system.

should i buy bulk webbing or buy loop runners? i measured from my foot to my nose and its about 5 feet and from my saddle to my nose is about 2 feet. there are a few things im worried about. one is breaking strength. the loop runners are 6,000lb and the bulk webbing is 4,000. when you water knot the 4,000lb webbing there has to be some strength loss right? would you recommend that i buy bulk webbing and water knot to make loops or stitched loop runners?

If you choose to buy bulk and tie water knots, I highly reco that at least 1 end be stitched. Water knots do come untied from loading and unloading.
The strength is doubled when tied in a loop, minus the loss of strength from the knot.

C'mon now, Norm posted some fabulous pix. How 'bout you put up some pix of your gear set?

Joshua,

Do you have the book "On Rope"? Pound for pound is about the best deal going. You can find it used for a few dollars and worth every red cent.

A lot of your answers are in the book. The nuances related to treework might not be so that's what TB is for. Oh...and skip the arbo chapter of OR :)
