Are Econmomics Greater Than Trees?

Making the falling cuts at ground level wouldnt have served any purpose. All the stumps were ground out, excavated and filled with concrete (some code about underground voids..).

On the big logs, the weight of the 'stump' was enough that they constituted a 'load' for our Bobcat.

To cut it at ground level, we still would have had to cut the log again to move it. Making such large felling cuts, with a big saw it made sense to do it at a comfortable height.

for some reason, I struggle with this with my guys for years now. My co-workers are awesome, don't get me wrong. but I'm like a broken record, "why didn't you notch and cut it near the ground? We are grinding the stump and now we have to make another cut and have a stupid chunk of wood to pick up." Drives me crazy. There are reasons to cut high at times, that is for sure.

cut it low , good to go . no fire wood . base cut or you carry that piece home. On another note , I cry when I cut the grass , only because I'm cutting it ! Trees , get over it !

The thinking on our crew is that its safer to make the felling cut at a comfortable height. Easier saw handling, quicker escape, better posture and more awareness.

To each their own.

All depends on your skill/comfort level and how you are disposing of the wood... I like to cut them ALAP.. can often get away with an undersized notc h on straight trees with a pull line so cutting the notch in the flare isn't too much hassle..

no biggie.. just saves some extra work..
