Arborist Nutrition

Chris,
It is great to see that you are proactive about your health and wellness. To do the work required of a production arborist, you need to care for your body as an industrial athlete, in order to prolong your career beyond that of a typical professional athlete. Hopefully, more people will begin to understand the importance of properly caring for their body as you seem to. I hope to see you at our open enrollment course in March.

In good health,
Amanda

I am Irish! and eat too much red meat. During the day, and workweek I am very picky as to what goes into my body. Lots of protein, fiber and fat....no Trans or Saturated though.

I haven't had soda in 6 years! Ive had fast food 4 times in 6 years. I don't eat processed foods. If we want cookies, brownies, cake etc we make it fresh. Lots of meat consumption in the house!!

I see guys on my crew eat Frito's, coke, and a pack of cupcakes........for breakfast! yuck

Any nutritionist, who isn't being paid by a gym/health center/supplement co will tell you diet is the single most important factor in losing/maintaining weight. A clean diet will do more for you than any supplement will.

And Sushi/Sashimi is its own food group, which touts all other groups combined!

years ago there was a time I was trying to get in touch with the primate keepers at the San Diego Zoo to find out the ultimate tree climbers diet .... I can do it with AM chai , then pizza and ale later.... repeat daily until wealthy ... or dead.....

It's not my only meal, but I usually keep a 2 to 3 pound container of cashews or almonds in my truck.

They store well, and make a good snack if I forget lunch or want a bit more to eat.

Don't melt either.

Water. How much does everybody drink? I find it tough to get the required 8 cups, especially in winter when I don't realize I'm dry.

My nutritionist says it is best to drink half of your body weight in number of ounces. So, I'm 150lbs. I drink the minimum of 75ounces per day.

Water intake isn't only important for cellular function, but also for daily detoxification (within the liver).

We are all different. No one nutritional regimen is the same for everyone.

The government says there is a daily average intake of nutrients for people. Well, we are definitely not the average person with our occupation. For example, the daily recommended average calorie intake is 2000. We arbos need much more than that.

I did a B.I.A. (Body Impedance Analysis) test with my Nutritionist/Chiropractor/Neurologist Doctor and we discovered that I have a Basal Metabolic Rate of 1850. Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories we need to just survive. So, I need 1850 calories per day if I only sat and did nothing. (Granted, my lifestyle is so active it is driving my BMR up there in the first place). So, to find out how many calories I need for any given work day we multiply that by 1.5. That came up to 2,775. So, that is my minimum caloric intake I need daily.

And the 3 square meals is a crock as well. We should be eating 5-6 smaller meals through out the day. If we go long periods of time without a meal, our body automatically thinks it is in starvation mode and it starts to use muscle for energy. So, eating more often is best. For me personally, I need to have about 462 calories per small meal (minimum) to properly feed my body.

This important to meet this need. Otherwise, our bodies will burn muscle to keep us going. And we will store fat. I used to wonder why I was working so hard, but I didn't have much proof of it.

I have changed my dietary habits a lot. After 1 month I gained 5lbs of muscle and reduced my fat mass. Simply by monitoring my caloric intake and eating more often...

think about the amount of calories the old school loggers burned

ONE logger in the days of "The Camps" ate 9000 calories per day!!
And 500 grams or one pound of coffee a week per logger!

The Camps with the best cooks/food got THE BEST loggers!

I wonder why...?
