BLinky , i actually agree!! what I tend to eat is a modified paleo. I use that as more of a model and adjust. The body even goes through seasonal changes that require shfts in food intake. What I can say definitivly is if you eliminate ALL processed crap and white sugar the body just runs better!!! I did a 30 day modified but strict diet at one point and all of my little aches and pains ,brain fog, sluggishness,GONE!! It was weird!! The first 14-17 days were really tough!! Your body literally is addicted to the garbage you feed it.....when you cut it off it revolts. At about day 20 i was clean !! I was freaked out how much more clear my mind was,and how good my body felt.I maintained for a while but "fell off the wagon." Im looking to get back on here soon.
And for the record....I hate boxes too!! I dont have to think outside of it cause i live there!!

Yep, I noticed a major difference in how well I felt by just knocking off soda... after that i slowly got away from coffee without even meaning to... it just happened, I still drink a cup now and then but not often... hell, now it gives me jitters and I used to drink so much espresso i could see right through things.

I'm big on fish, mainly because i just like it. Mainly the second or third tier fish like trout and tilapia. Fish tacos ROCK.

This time of year I tend to forget to drink water at work... and I feel it later.

and what's wrong with that?

Its kind of weird how we tend to forget water in t he winter!! My insight is that in the summer we see and feel it coming out of us and its drilled into our heads....drink drink drink!! In the winter we work we sweat and the air tends to be really dry so it just sucks the water right out of you!! But its kind of under the radar cause we dont see it.Anyway that's mt spin....
Fish tacos.....im gonna try that!!!! i must admit sometimes i still struggle w coffee! I drink 90/95% decaf and i use almond milk and agave as a sweetener...But on occasion i break down and get a cafe mocha at starbucks!! Its like kryptonite.......then i get VERY INTENSE!!

I think I've just had my lifetime quota of caffeinated beverage. I still love the taste of good fresh coffee but if i drink it before climbing i get the jitters and it has the same effect as being skeered, it makes climbing harder, especially on spikes because my knees don't feel stable. So i avoid it. Good decaf is OK but I ragged on people for being wimpy and drinking decaf for so long that i can't bring myself to order it.

I don't really miss it, i drink other stuff but mostly water and cranberry/grape juice. This is what happens when you get old guys, first it's the eyesight and everything starts getting rickety bit by bit. I'm still strong as hell but all this other stuff getting out of whack... it sucks... definitely not for sissies.

yep, fish tacos with shredded cabbage... great flavor, wicked farts.

Man I need a something...and I just know it's diet related. I'm getting fatter and stupider by the minute and my God given common senses tell me that it's because of all the coffee and garbage I ram in my piehole. I normally excercise a lot of self love and meditation and connectedness that goes with other elements of a person's health but my diet is in the can and those things just feel out of reach at the moment. Venting, thank you...

Kristian... exercise HARD and long for a few weeks and your body will insist that you eat better. The key for me and nutrition is, my activity dictates what and how much i eat. I put on weight in the Winter but it's always gone by April.

We've recently started a company wide diet. The reward for the person who loses the most weight percentage wise wins 200 bucks.

Since then everyone started packing lunches. The human crane lost 8lbs in a week. I'm only down 2 pounds so far but I weighed in a few days ago and I was down yet another 3 pounds.

We've been serving ourselves with a measuring cup at dinner, that way we know exactly how much we're eating.

It may just be winter blues. My weight normally varies from 198 in the winter to 187 in the summer. I just wish I could keep it at 187 all year round. Thanks Blinky

You guys!
Guys can skip one meal and voila...diet done!
My weight hardly varies at all. I have put on 2 pounds this winter and I really, really, really hope that its muscle from all the gym time during these slow weeks.
I like what Blinky has said about the body insisting on proper food.
I have always found that hard work suppresses my appetite for several hours and its hard to eat lunch. But then when the appetite kicks in, it really kicks in. Does that happen to anyone else?

Yup, happens to me all the time in summer. I have to remember and stop to eat.

Great posts here! I haven't tuned into this forum in a month or two.

I also try (I have a soft spot, OK I'm addicted to fine confections and good ice cream/gelato!) to eat clean. I prepare as many homemade meals that I have time for. My wife isn't the best cook, though she tries. We do however make sure our kids eat the best meals available. Loads of fruits and veggies, and little if any processed foods. Their diet is mainly organic, and they are healthy as us. Sick maybe once a year (they are 2 now). They have never drank anything other than milk and water, and have never asked for anything other than milk and water. If we ate like our kids we would be broke. Eating healthy isnt cheap, and I think that is why many Americans eat ultra processed JUNK. We buy from farmers markets in the summer, and will be hopefully finding a good local CSA to join this spring.

I drink only water, the very occasional glass of milk/beer/sparkling fruit juice. I have 1-2 cups of coffee a day, I love good coffee, and if their is none available in the area I am in I wont have coffee that day, it is truly a taste for me not a desired effect. I am actually sensitive to caffeine and get jittery quickly.

I have packed an Organic PB&J for lunch on wheat bread for years now, I also have banana, apple, peach, etc everyday. I snack on nuts and dried fruit while at work as well. My biggest downfall is being home. I love to cook, and I love to eat. If I ate out instead of cooking these things at home, I would have so much MSG, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Trans Fat, etc in my diet I would be dead.

OK Rant over. I could go on forever about nutrition and my strong beliefs in it.

You guys doing the Paleo diet.....thats some hardcore stuff. You should be proud. Cavemen only lived to like 32 or something though didn't they?

I should have added that removing ALL soda/diet drinks, fastfood, trans fats, and highfructose corn syrup from my diet has kept my weight the same over the 8-9 years I have been practicing this. I attribute this directly to the fact that I removed these items from my diet. I havent had heartburn, save for the odd time or two a year, since i stopped drinking soda. I used to get it everyday!

This is very true, I'm addicted to potato chips, salted peanuts and Coca Cola, preferably all at the same time. I think its due to the crunch of the chips combined with the salt and heavier crunch the peanuts and sugar from the Cola.

Also, eating a potato chip reminds me of being a kid when I didnt have anything to worry about and the world was a good place, so when I want to feel good I eat a bag of potato chips.........or half a tube of Pringles and I am instantly returned to my childhood days of playing football in the park with my buddies.

There are some excellent posts in this thread, its got me thinking about trying to seriously overcome my addiction.

One thing i need to mention/re-mention....the amount of sugar intake. This stuff is pure poison!!Even if it sounds really cool and they call it"evaporated cane" um.....sugar! If you can take the time and do a little label survey of grams of sugar per serving. This includes all the code names for sugar....ESPECIALLY high fructose corn syrup!!! This stuff is even in bread.sugar creates in our bodies an environment fo all kinds of other bad stuff like bacteria and candida growth....yuk!
thats todays rant sorry

Sugar isn't poison... sugar is carbohydrate, you can't climb trees without it. How you get it is what matters and I agree that processed sugar and HFCS is crap designed to make stuff sweet so people buy it... but you NEED sugars. You also need them often when you're working because your body can only store a couple of hours worth. That's why bananas are so great, it's not so much the potassium as it is the simple sugars. You only want to take on simple sugars when you're burning them actively, otherwise you bounce your blood sugar and insulin output which is a downward spiral. Deserts after dinner are a BAD idea.

Zebra cakes are FULL of simple sugars but they're refined and contain little else in the way of nutrients... so they suck because all they do is raise your blood sugar and give you an addictive rush. I used to could eat 5 zebra cakes in one pass without feeling it, now I can't finish even one without feeling uncomfortable because I keep my sugar intake low unless I'm cranking.

Eating well IS expensive... in the USA. In most developed countries it's normal though. We've created a culture where BUYING stuff is what we do... it's the basis of our economy (an unsustainable one). People buy what they are conditioned to buy through marketing. Selling stuff on a mass scale requires mass production, packaging, transportion and storage... and that requires lots of processing and additives (like sugar).
When we bought or traded for all our food locally and in season, obesity wasn't even an issue much less an epidemic.

So in a sense, if paleo is what it sounds like, it's on track back to more natural nutrition. But any PRESCRIBED diet is by definition, not well adapted to the individual and the constantly changing circumstances that individual lives in.
Your body is THE best indicator of what you should be eating and season is THE best regulator of what should be available for you to eat.

Nice thing is, if you generally eat well based on your appetite and avoid processed, pre-packaged foods... you can break the rules and pig out every now and then without causing any damage.

Eating well is expensive but what could be more important than the food you eat, the water you drink and the air you breath? It's worth every penny even if you have to go without fancy beer or that new car smell every three years.

If someone offered me a banana or a tube of salt and vinegar Pringles, I would tend to choose the Pringles despite the fact I know the banana is better for me.

Why is this?

even looking at this photo makes me want to get in my car and travel 8 miles to the nearest store -

but I wont. I'll have an apple instead.
