Anything wrong with owning more than one rope??

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

One opinion...My smaller diamater lines seem to work better with my hardware, while my blue streak with softer knap rules the day with hitches.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

I run PI and Blaze and love both of them. They are both light, blaze should be a touch lighter than PI. I also have a small hank of fly for little trees which I really like and I like the blaze and PI if that helps.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

There is absolutely nothing at all with owning more than one rope, in fact, I have at least a dozen. Usually I only keep about 6 in the Jeep though....

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

I own 3 ropes and am looking into getting my 4th. I use different ropes for different situations and trees such as a line for natural crotching, a line for pines, etc. I'm now looking into getting 200' of velocity line. There's nothing wrong with multiple lines, but damn does it get expensive.

My question is who owns just one rope?

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

One plug for the velocity line. It is a true 11mm line (maybe a bit smaller??) but it does not 'bounce' at all. I have a 150' of fly that I rarely use as I go with the blaze or velocity lines (120 and 150) almost every time. The fly seems too bouncy to me, but that's a personal opinion.

We just got a 200' tachyon line up at the arboretum and it is sweet! Only used it a handful of times, but it stays pretty round and works great with the mechanical stuff. Good luck!

EDIT: I'm pretty sure I just gave a plug for three different ropes, hahaha, they're all pretty nice!

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

The climbline is the arborists most valuable tool.

How many of you remember the days when manila climblines were boss. And they lasted about 6 months, at most.

A new manila rope back in the 60's was stiff as steel cable and would leave splinters in your hands. Quality stuff in its day. About 3 months into using it the working end was noticeably thinner than the tail end... So we would switch it around and wear out the other end until the climbline was uniformly wore out.

Old school ruled: Knotted directly to a snap and tied a taughtline with the tail. After a few months we would get a brand new stiff splintery rope. Two to three climblines a year on average. There was nothing better, it was state of the art.

Today I have bags and bags of rope that I will never live long enough to use. Hell, a new sythetic climbline today can last a climber years of rugged use. And it's all good.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

Cool background, Gerr. How would you finally decide when to retire the line, after it was evenly worn? Like how thin did you want it to get?

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

I remember the pita hockling and kinking that would occur below the tautline when using 3 strand synthetics...braided lines are a blessing.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

Yeah, thinner and lighter with age... It has a good ring to it.

I was a newbie when we were using the manila (20 years old) and I took the advise of the older guys. They'd look at my rope and say,"bout time to get another rope, Jer. Don't cha think?" After a year or so I could figure it out myself.

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

If your looking for a soft rope def do not get the blaze. I have the fly, use both PI and blaze on occation. No other line i've tryed has the feel that the fly does. PI is nice though. Climbed on tachyon once but don't remember the charactoristics well. I'm probably sticking with my fly, inexpensive and quality. Thats what i always look for. (I Really like the soft feel of fly, gonna be hard to find in another rope. RD)

Re: Anything wrong with owning more than one rope?

i like to have multiple lengths for different tasks. 120 blaze, 150 blue moon, 200 fly, 300 static for srt ascent, and a 120 master that i only use for removals. does anyone use retired climbing lines for taglines or light rigging? my boss wants me to get rid of retired lines, but i dye them and tape the ends a specific color so we know what's what.

Funny just read my post and how things change quickly. I am down to two ropes both are Tachyon. Velocity doesn't make spec here in Ontario and my little Fly got retired.
