Anyone train?

I started a "work hardening" program yesterday. Six hours of lifting, stretching and bending. I was so sore this mornin, I could barely get out of bed to go to my next session. Motrin is my friend.
I guess that's what happens when you don't work for 7 months. Ouch!!

Me too Norm,

I haven't worked-out my legs since fifth grade (outside of tree work and running). It seems like every exercise they give me targets the quads or hamstrings. I'd leave with numb legs, and go back too sore to do the exercises properly.
One day the therapist questioned (in a very annoying way) if I was putting any effort into it, and I kind of snapped at her. "HOW MANY TIMES DO i HAVE TO TELL YOU i'M SORE!!!!!!!!!!!" All the girls who work there giggle at me now. I don't know if its cuz my legs are so pathetic, or cuz they know I can't keep my cool. Probably both. Oh well. I'll be climbing soon, and they'll be stuck therapisting. John.

I am no people doctor, but I swear when I had my fusion they told me not to take Motrin. That it reduces your bodies ability to create bone. Not sure if it is true or if I am remembering it right, but thought you might like to know.

Happy as a clam that I had my fusion, but still didn't make me a good climber /forum/images/graemlins/applaudit.gif.

Good luck with your recovery,

Brian

John,
Hang in there. The soreness went away after about a week. I actually was looking forward to going cause I could feel myself building endurance and strength. The icing on the cake was climbing and pruning trees the last week of therapy.

Brian,
I don't recall hearing about the Motrin issue, but I appreciate the info. I'll definitely check into it cause I do take Motrin when I have body aches. I'm gonna be in the San Jose area (Menlo Park, Mountain View) the week of Jan. 24 and Feb. 14 for business but the nights are open. Dinner?

so am i the only climber/martial artist out there? can't be. i've trained in aikido probably an average of 3 times/wk for 10 yrs. good aerobic exercise, good place to build confidence, balance, people skills, focus. tough to keep to 3 days/wk around competition time though. i may not compete at all this year because i'm testing for rank in october.

i did thai boxing for a long time but found my injuries kept hindering my work so called it a day.
always fancied doing aikido but felt it needed a lot more time devoted too it than other martial arts, also its not an art you can practise alone very well. you have a regular training partner?

steve, i belong to a school or "dojo" which has class 3x day most days - a monthly fee and you can train as much as you like. yeah, it's hard to practice aikido alone. for me, it's much more than a workout though. if i just want a workout i'll go climbing or ride a bike. another person in the mix keeps things interesting.

right. duh. sorry about that. so mb, which art and how long? i'm curious because i think training in aikido, though it takes energy, has actually benefited my work stamina. a guy i used to work with said he didn't know how i could go to class after what we'd spent the day doing because all he wanted to do was go home and smoke a fattie in front of the tv. but the times i've slacked on training work has actually seemed physically harder and taken more out of me. does that make any sense? i dunno. seems to be true.

any other martial artists lurking out there..?
k.

ok, went to the gym today for the first time in about 10 years. Never have gone seriously or for a long period of time. I figured now was as good a time as any to start. I have a young friend that is into the scene (weightlifting) and I decided to join him three times a week (he goes five times) and work out some to get in better shape, that is to build some healthy muscle and increase aerobic fitness. I started today with medium wieght and worked my legs out. I am betting I am going to be a bit sore in the morning ;) . I am thinking that if I go 3 times a week for a month or so then I can add a couple of days of bike or treadmill or something in as well. I have to outline a goal but at this point I will be happy if I can keep it up and stick to a program. I will never look like Arnold (I have an opposite body type ectomorph vs endomorph)) but I would like to be strong and balanced. We shall see. I weighed in tonight and I will keep track of what I do and where I get, for my own interest. Maybe someday I can have pipes like the MasterBlaster! /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I went to buy a whole set of weights, barbells, dumbells, different bars, extra weights, gloves belts, the lot. No way I could carry that to the car so I went to the pub.
