i'm just going to throw an idea out, but i might be completely off, so take it for what it's worth. the flowers and the leaves (to some extent) look like they belong to the Castanopsis genus, which contains (according to wikipedia) about 120 species, including the Golden Chinkapin.

It is an Acacia sp. Check around to see which species are commonly grown in your area.

does it have thorns? I have always thought of acacias as thorny. There are hundresds of acacia species though correct?
