Amsteel winch line question..

What works best for you guys? Splice and thimble; splice no thimble? Also what are your solutions to pull through? Our cable has a hook and large rubber grommet. Interested to hear what works best... trying to skip the trial and error portion. Thanks

Our Bandit 1590's winch has a splice with no thimble. That rubber stopper got ripped off a while back. If the hook gets sucked up in there, we can usually get it out by hand. If not, a crowbar is handy.

Our 1/2" has a specialty steel thimble and splice.
Our 1/4" or 3/8" line on our Bandit 250 chipper winch has a bowline and no thimble on the grab hook used for cinching on trees/ limbs. The winch has stopped pulling before the line has broken.

Splice, no thimble. Abrasion-resistant casing before the splice is completed. Big hook that can't get sucked in. I put one of those gunnebo johnson hooks on, it is oversized.

Treestuff.com has "swift line," which you should look into. Same tensile strength, more highly visible (orange), and a LOT LESS MONEY.

Swift line comes in a 150' hank, has the abrasion-resistant stuff already on it, and a splice for $250.

Roger, it depends on which works best for you. If you put a thimble and steel hook on it, will it get sucked into the chipper, causing major damage?
The best scenario for the rope is a splice around a 'wire rope thimble' and whichever hook you decide to use.
'Towerline' is Dyneema SK75, which is the same as Amsteel Blue. I've used it for winch lines applications (both the 5/16's and 3/8's") for 4 years. It's a great product.

Good thread! I’m in serious need of a new winch line, my cable is on its last four threads and is ready to snap. I would like to go with a rope as well. How much rope do you all recommend on a brush bandit 254? Should I go with 150 or 200ft. How does rope hold up in winter conditions and if it gets wet will it freeze up around the winch so you can’t use it?

You'll be SURE to fit the 150' on, you might be pushing it with 200. Then again, worst case scenario is that you cut off the excess footage and make some slings out of it.

Wet/freezing, I don't think that's too much of an issue, but I don't know your weather conditions - where are you? We never have had a problem, as the line stays dry under the cover until it is deployed. Never had it freeze wet, so don't know.

Norm, that's the stuff I recommended - treestuff.com sells it the cheapest I've found. Great value.

Thanks for the quick response. We are in CT gets cold in the winter. I just talked to the dealer and he recommended 150ft 5/16. So I’ll probably go with the swift line. I like that it is hi viz.

Dyneema SK75 doesn't absorb water. It has a 'specific gravity' of .98, so it floats on water.
I've used it in NE Illinois (Chicagoland) during the winter months and have had no problems with moisture.
