Interesting backstory is that Worcester was hit by a tornado in 1953 and back to back hurricanes in 1954. Northern end of Worcester was replanted primarily with Norway maple, fast forward to 2000 and ALB comes in and chows down on the monoculture city trees. Compare to Boston which has a diverse species mix in wooded areas and ALB didn't budge out of an isolated site (6 landscape planted red maples) for approx. ten years, despite being a hundred feet from a large natural wooded area and across the street from the Arnold Arboretum. A big lesson is give up on monoculture street and landscape plantings or pay the price down the road.
I mention this because various well-meaning green advocacy organizations in Boston leveraged the Worcester event (25,000+ trees taken down) to whip up fear in Boston.
Before I get off my soapbox I'll say I disagree with the currently promoted strategy of not planting ALB host species, just mix it up and all is good.
