Aerial rescue practice

If the FD is already on scene when you get there, I very much doubt you will be allowed to even approach the tree, let alone climb it. For those same liability reasons. They let you climb and something goes wrong.....
Everything is about "due diligence" and signing your name to this and that paper, attesting that on that particular date, you were found competent to perform such and such. An unfortunate but necessary CYA mentality that (volunteer) FD's gotta go by nowadays. Ask your town's CFO or mayor what percentage of your municipal taxes go to pay their insurance premiums!

I have a volunteer FD where I live, w/ EMS.
My neighbor is an practicing Emergency Room doctor; he was also the assistant coroner at the time.

Years ago he called & invited them to call him out on any EMS call.

The response was "no thanks" due to liability concerns ! ! !

(I guess he had not gone thru the VFD "training". ? ? ?)

Well the handy thing about all this is I'm on the FD and closest to the hall. So if I heard the page I'd prob go straight to the scene. I have all of my climbing gear in my vehicle and first aid in my car as well. Don't worry about insurance the tax payers pay, you should see our trucks and if you only knew what our chiefs salary is...... also Id happily get fired if I saved that person. It's about the public not about us. If that's what needed to happen then so be it, I'll be in the tree regardless.

We have 2 full time firefighters and 2 cops on our dept, and they have to do all the same training as "new recruits" as actual new recruits need to do, because they are new to the hall. Now thats brutal, considering our recruit process is every other weekend for just shy of a year.

Volunteer FD's have wide variance in their SOP's / SOG's (whatever you want to call them.)! Aerial rescue training? Competent to perform an actual rescue? Good luck with that! If it is rarely (if ever) practiced in a scenario, how well does anyone think it is going to come off in real life?
If you require EMS response anywhere in Ontario, the responding paramedics are gonna operate to the same BTLS standards and procedures. ie, you are basically gonna receive the same treatment, based on the same protocols.
Not so with volunteer FD's! It's left up to the Chief, who ultimately determines whether the members are robots, or become highly trained individuals with impressive skill sets. Robot FD's have a high turnover...but two legs and a beating heart will get you admission into the club. Play by the rules, and keep your mouth shut, (yes man all the way, baby) and soon enough you can become an acting captain or higher!

No no I would be acting 100% as a good Samaritan who just happened to be driving by. Chances are I'd be first on scene which may give me time to get spurs and belt on. On my other hall we don't have a boat other than our ice water rescue boat so if we get a water rescue call we have a number of good Samaritans that may or may not be a part of the fire service that will let us use their boat for rescue.

Too bad you couldn't make it Jesse. But by that pic, I fully understand.
Cuba? Or Mexico?
Would have been great to see you again.
Dave (Pelorus) made it down.
Would like to do another later in the year (warmer) but were all usually pretty busy then..... But you never know ;)
Enjoy your vacation. Bring some warmer weather back. (Not that it hasn't been a bad year)

I am in Barbados. Climbed a few times with Paul aka "Swingdude". Looks like they got blasted with snow back home this week. Might have to stay here longer, I am allergic to snow!!:descansando:

You bum! I`m gonna bring a trailer load of snow to your house and leave some inside with your air conditioner on so when you get back from paradise you`ll feel like you never missed winter! ha ha

I appreciate you looking out for me Devon! I looked on the cameras at the shop and Its looks like we have got our fair share of snow there now. My brother said there have been streamers coming off the lake and dumping down. It should have been snowing in January when it was 10*c!! Crazy weather!

Jesse, you're missing a bit of an Acrtic blast this weekend. Minus 30-35 degrees C. (-22F to -31F for our American friends). Supposed to get back to seasonal temps this week.
If I were you I'd stay a little longer......... Say 2 months ;).
By then you won't need to worry about moving any snow.

That forecast sounds lovely Chuck! LOL Hopefully it warms up and the snow goes away early. I am not into moving snow, scraping windshields, plugging in trucks so they start, frozen toolbox locks etc.... My favourite part of winter is watching it on tv from the Caribbean! Stay safe and warm up there!
