Adjustable Friction Saver

What kind of rope did you construct that out off? That is very interesting. I would also be curious what it breaks at. Could you also use a longer one in conjunction with an endless loop sling two carabiners and a prussik for a spider leg balancer that could be easily adjusted. Like as far as a single leg to be used off the main rigging line?

Also it'd be interesting to have Rob break one of these or actually two of these. One in a straight line configuration and one actually wrapped or bent as it would be used in a FS.

Tyler,
Its 3/8ths tenex single carrier. Approx 5400lb MBS. I buried the adjustable portion for well over the standard two fids.

I have one adjustable spider leg with the same type of adjustment. I believe that was Scotty and Jason Diehl's idea. Its great for being able to tweak the leg position. On that tool I used two different colors of tenex (white and orange). On the Friction Saver I just removed the black tracer strand to differentiate the sides.

Similar. Adjustment is the same.

I would like to offer one important caveat for this type of sling. I've made these before for certain tasks. They must be used with caution.

With a standard whoopie sling, with a light load on the rope, you can't adjust the sling no matter what you do. The load pinches down on the adjustable part from both ends.

With the design shown in this thread, you can fully load the sling, then just gently nudge the adjustable part and the sling will extend...while still fully loaded.

I don't think that would ever occur when used as an adjustable false crotch, since in use, the sling never moves. But as a spider leg balancer, the sling is being moved around the trees, being lowered and raised. Something bad could happen.

Other than that- neat idea! I tried this for a climbing hitch once. It worked, but was a little jerky. Also it was impractible as it needed to be loaded at the end of the line. It could not be removed during the climb.

Nice Cory! When did you start splicin? Looks good in the pic, but let Rich H. check it out before use.
If I understand your technique correctly, the small ring side has 11 strands?
I have never sign a tenex product with a 'colored' tracer. When I 1st saw the attachment, I thought it was Samson Duraplex.

Very nice. Alot better than my idea I'll have to cut my rings out and make one that looks like this. I just had a stopped knot on one end and a prussik that slid from from the one ring to the other knot. Nothing fancy.

Thanks for the heads-up Nick. Never had that happen, but now we're aware of it. That sling really doesn't get much use. Lots of other options.

Why cut it? Two new rings will cost only about $15 total and then you'll have two AFS's.

If you use the AFS in a choked system your one with a Prusik will work on a smaller stem.

That's what I have, New England Hi-Vee, love it, wouldn't change it. Like Mark says, just by some more rings and have a second FS.

I'll keep my adjustable one and cut my non adjustable. I have two sets of rings right now. I'll have to take a picture of these just for show and tell. Plus the splices aren't that great and I haven’t spliced anything lately so it would give me something to do.

I made a choker of the same design once to use in place of a whoopie sling but I stopped using it after considering the lesser strength of the design.

I would expect this setup to slip if shock loaded in some situations.
