Adjustable Friction Saver

I find that the AFC with a carabiner is more efficient, at least in my climbing system. The way that I use it, you unclip the carabiner and everything else stays attached. Reposition the AFC, unclip the carabiner and put the climbing line back in and you are ready to go.

If you are climbing on a splice climbing line, it is a little less efficient. Unclip the climbing line, pull it through the large ring (or both, and hang on to it so you don't drop it), reposition, thread the climbing line back through the large ring (or both) and you are ready to go.

If you are still tying knots for termination, it is slower still (see above, except add untie and re-tie).

As I said, I use my AFC mainly for removals. I can set it up on the ground before I begin my ascent, unclip the carabiner, drape it over my shoulder and use my positioning lanyard as I move up the tree. I put the AFC on before I use my chain saw so I don't have to work both forms of attachment as I go up.

There are many climbing systems and styles and what works and is efficient for me, may not be for others.
