A dirty question.

Hi all you buzzers, for some reason this year i seem to have had a lot of Black Pines to take down, my question is what do you wash you,r lines and ropes, strops etc in when contaminated with pine resin? When i,ve washed the in the past using a fabric cleaner (which gives me misses the hump} i have not had a great deal of sucsess.

Any advice on this matter would be great
Cheers.

a nice mild detergent will do you some good but I believe there is a thread on the site somewhere around here. Tom dunlap has a lot of insight on this try to pm/email him.

I've used laundry detergent with minimal success so I useually keep a line specifically for pines. I even have specific gear for climbing pines/rain climbing gear. I hate pine trees!!!!

Bob,
Do you use a cambium saver?

I don't do a lot of pines but when I do my ropes stay fairly clean.

I agree Jim. F.S. do help. A little... I seem to manage my ropes to get sap in them all the time.

Oil?

Not just any plain old oil. It has to be extra virgin first press olive oil. Nothing cheap and low class for MY ropes :)

Follow the manufacturers directions.

There are at least a couple of other threads on rope washing that you could read through.

really tom? olive oil? pressed at that!

I'm gonna try it 2moro, got a spruce removal.

In our area we have lots of Grand Fir and Douglas-fir both of which can be terrible for sap, the younger bark is often covered in little sap bubbles that burst as soon as you even bump them a little. I keep a sheath on my lanyards all the time and do everything I can to keep from tying into natural crotches with my climbing line. I think I may try a sheath on the last couple feet of my climbing line too when I need it.

I just use 2" tubular webbing for a sheath.

I also rarely wash my ropes when they get sapped up because it seems that having a clean rope almost guarantees a sappy removal in the very near future not sure why that is.

I use a mild detergent such as All Clear, Arm & Hammer or SA-8 along with a cup of Pine Sol. Warm water in a front loading washer, hang to dry.

You need to use very warm water to soften the pitch or it won't come out.

Seems to get most of the pitch and dirt out without problem. On real messy ropes I'll wash it twice.

Definitely works on my lanyard and hip prusiks too.

For spot treatment or pitch on the saddle, my shirts or my skin I'll use something called "GOOP! The Stain Lifter" I find it in the automotive section of Waldo-Mart.

try lettingt he dry out fer a couple days in some good sun light and running them threw the washers twice with no detergentents in a rope bag.. living in oregon and owrking on alot of conifers have seem to be proven that you go threw alot of ropes due to zap pitch and nasty crapp seems to work fine for me some times if there really bad throw em threw three timess..

Cheers again for all your advice, never thought of mao or olive oil either, you,d have to then wash the ropes anyway??? Some of the other products you mentioned i am not sure if they are available in the UK. I do use a Cambium saver but drips and the rope running over fresh wounds, no matter how hard i try allways get some resin on the kit.

Cheers
Rob.
