8mm or 10mm Bee Line for 11.7mm rope???

I've been waiting to post this for some time know. I 've been wondering if the 10mm Bee Line wuold work for a friction cord on an 11.7mm rope (PI) used as a VT or Distel knot. I know some do and some don't, but from some other posts it looks like it might.(TM Ocean polyster is 10mm I think and it looks like it works on PI) Just wondered, as I've used the 8mm for awhile now and it seems alittle thin to me. I have a 10mm Bee Line set up as a 5ft regular tail for my Blake's hitch whenever I feel like switching over for a few climbs it holds great on my Fly. Just thought I would post and see. Thanks

I have used the 8 and 10 mm beeline for the velocity, fly, and tachyon. me being a bigger guy, the 8 mil tended to lock up. However the greatest mix I have found is 10mm grizzly splice with an XT (a variation of the VT) on the new Tachyon.... smooth... real smooth. Haven't tried the PI but a buddy of mine uses the 8mm beeline with PI and loves it.

Thanks. I just got a new Bailey's catlog and their price for Tachyon os alot lower than Sherrill's by about $30.00, so I may end up getting up either one. And could I get a pic of the XT. I've never heard of it before.

Not getting personal or anything but how big! ;)
Just curious I run around 215 and am looking for the right mix on my Tachyon

tis true..i do love it. never used the 10 mm but i really have no desire to. I am climbing on a 16 strand half inch line right now cus thats what was given to me and i hate it. I am pretty much fed up with this rope so i am just gonna buy a brand new PI and be happy again. I'll tell ya, i got some funny looks when i was given a new blue streak and said i don't want that one, i want a different one. anyway, i had to vent (this cold weather is really starting to get to me) so..i'm better now

I used 8mm beeline on PI with a Distel and it locked up more than I liked, with a VT it was pretty smooth but it glazed up every three or four climbs and I got tired of working that out. I switched to HRC and haven't looked back.

Haven't tried it on Tachyon except as a lanyard but EZPhloem uses HRC on Tachyon and likes it.

Remember that 8mm beeline is a completely different cord from 10mm Beeline.
- 8mm has a vectran with a 75% technora/25% polyester jacket which is spliced as a hollow braid with and exposed eye; it's rated at 8000#.
- 10mm Beeline has a polyester (Yalex) core with a 50% technora/50% polyester jacket and is spliced as a double braid; it's rated at 7500#.

Go figure.

Thanks. What is HRC. I know I've seen it somewhere, just can't remember where. Thats the same problem I'm having on mine also. It's getting glazed but I've owned it for about a year know, so its been ok. It's held it shape until now. Thanks

What is the average life span of your friction hitches? I'm getting ready to use blaze and 8mm bee-line but I only weight 160 maybe 170 at Thanksgiving (and use the VT).

Hey Rangerdanger, for a Blake's on a split tail the 8mm Beeline is not going to be good, it will bite the rope too hard. For a Blake's split tail I think you're better off going same diameter as the climbing rope, that's where a Blake's performs best. I wouldn't worry about using heat resistant cord for that setup.

For a closed hitch, VT, XT etc. 8mm Beeline works great for me, the 10mm is way too fat for a closed hitch on the less than half inch ropes. Then again I'm a flyweight, clearly the oatmeal fed sumo wrestling climbers among us prefer the 10mm for a closed hitch split tail.

You can find HRC at Wesspur and probably many other online arborist suppliers.

You're about the same size as me, I'm closer to 185lbs.
I don't know that Wespur sells HRC as a pre-spliced split tail. You buy it by the foot. Here's the link...
http://wesspur.com/rope/bulk-prusik-cord.html

$1.79/foot is a good price. They show the breaking strength at 4500# but New England states 6500#. It's listed as HRC but the trade name is New England Therma-Shield. Fresco definitely has it but they want $2.20/foot, Knot and Rope Supply carries it but hasn't had any in stock the last few times I checked. If you want it spliced I'll bet Nick or RichH at Anchor Bridge Ropeworks will make one up for you.

HRC is an 8mm cord and has a vectran core like 8mm Beeline. The jacket is what makes it different, it's a blend of Technora and Nomex... it doesn't glaze. I've just burned it for about 20' before and didn't phase it. It's easy to splice or you can just knot it. It's definitely worth trying out.

I've got to make 20 or so HRC eye-eye tails in the next week or two here!!!

It's good stuff. It can take the abuse. Last I checked Bishop was selling prespliced eye-eyes out of it.

I stopped at american arborist on mon. I know they are selling spliced eye to eye hrc split tails. They are very nice. Check them out at arborist.com

i also am about 6' 170 lbs and i've used both 8&10mm beeline and way perfer the 8mm as the 10mm didnt seem to want to bite on the rope enough and alays slid even with 5 top wraps(wasn't good) i went 8mm and havent lookd back, i'm fixin to give hrc a try here real soon try as many different things as possible to see what you prefer the best.

i hear ya on trying all the new toys but price plays alot into what i pick. I'll play around with certain things when i get the money. Some days i wish i ran my own business so i could buy all this cordage and actually have some fun.

Just like Beeline. Exposed eye with locking brummell in the core, whip the cover down at the base of the eye, dip the eye a few times in Maxijacket (or equivalent) coating.

I've called NER a few times on it and the only thing that differs is sometimes they say bury 6" and sometimes they say to bury 4".

I can post pics in a little bit.

Yep. Oh, I think one of the times they recommended doing a double locking brummell. Right now I still do the single, though, as they haven't been consistent in this part.

And difference between the ultratech splice is that after you are done, you can actually use the HRC to burn out of a tree! :)
