so willie, your from medford, eh? that means we're both oregonians! anyway, could you describe a bit more what you mean about putting a groove in the HDR. I can kinda picture what your describing, but i'm not sure. I will try to draw a picture . . .

yeah exactly. it wouldnt even need to goall the way. as long as its a 1/2 inch -1 inch wide and 1/2 -3/4 inch deep your rope would stay in it as long as you have weight in it. they make wood working tools for use with a lathe that would be better than a wood chisel but i figuered most people had an old chisel around. yup medford it is. south part of what valley are you in? ashland?

A drill press can be used as a lathe too.

Take a look at this setup:

Another option would be to get hold of Paul Sisson in Seattle and have him make up one of the rollers with a radius in it. I think that Paul is the one who originated the roller. He might still make them too.

You'll want to have the profile of the radius deep enough to capture the rope. If it's too shallow the rope would tend to walk up over the edges like it does now.

Stick a large flat washer on a bolt, slip it through what you've got, put another washer on, then a nut, and chuck it up in a drill. Use a piece of course emery cloth to start, maybe a finer one to finish, and gnaw some material out of the middle so it takes on a dished shape. That should go a ways toward keeping the rope away from the edges.
