I attempted to make my own but the magnets I found were not strong enough. It may be the ones you have will work. 95# sound like a lot. Not sure what the pulling force was for the magnets I found. In the end I went ahead and bought Mr. Mumford's 2 piece mag throw weights and have not been disappointed! I am now using them mostly for retrieving saws and such from the ground using the DMM Captain for traversing. Making your own gear is certainly an aspect of tree climbing that I enjoy.

I'd bet they'll work, but like papadirk said, try to get your hands on a captain. The whole throwline in the tree thing sounds like a pain in the butt. ...although I've never tried it.

Watch out for the pinch with those rare earth magnets, too. Keep your fingers well clear of the area between the magnets and any object you're attempting to attach them to. They close the gap really quickly.

I have Mumford's magnets. Nice product, but I'm nowhere near as slick with them as I need to be to be effective with them. Richard makes it look easy in his videos. It takes quite a bit of practice, and a really well set-up system. Practice a lot on the ground using some short trees to try to wrap your mind around Richard's various methods.

Good luck with it. I'd love to hear how well this goes for you.

@monkeylove; Yeah, I've come close, probably a few times. For me the trick is to get ahold of them by the their eye bolts when they are well away from each other, and then bring them together.

It was nice of Richard to leave in the video of him pinching his own fingers with his own product, as a warning to purchasers of just how easily it can happen.
