2ton ratchet puller failure

just wondering if anybody else out there has had any trouble with the 2 ton heavy duty ratchet puller (i think that sherrill calls it the more power puller)
i did less than 20 jobs with it when i started to notice some binding going on as i started to pull through the bind (noticing that the cable wasnt that tight)
the teeth that engage the drum on the handle inverted now i cant get it back.
the guys at baileys are telling me im the only one they heard of this happening to and are telling me its out of the warranty time so they wont replace it.

Is it one with stamped steel side plates?

I've never had much trust for those, they all seem to fail or get jacked somehow.

The ones with cast aluminum frames are much better. Not much more expensive and I've never had a failure. The thin thimble that came with the unit buckled which lead to the cable fraying at the swage. I took the unit to an industrial cable/sling supply company and they used a thick thimble and solid swage for replacement. That only took about four inches of cable off.

i believe that this is cast b/c its heavy as hell. they are going for almost 200 bucks thats why im pissed, i thought it would last or i would of just bought one of the cheap one for $50.

just curious if anyone has tried to use a winch for something like this? its a bit heavy but i was thinking of taking my detachable warn 9000 into hard to reach places. id anchor it similarly to the honda powered portable winch would. and bring a spare battery. has anyone tried this? i feel like this would be a pain in the but bullet proof.

that was frustrating 20 min

I see a bit of birdnesting in the cable but the gears and fingers look OK.

What am I missing?

Can't you get it to go into 'neutral' so that you can slack out the line?

i can slack it out with no problem but will not be able to suck it back in, unless i roll the drum by hand. i just cant beleive im the only one with this problem. the handle is meant to break before the device does.

I think that the spring may have slipped allowing the fingers to flop over.

Look on the left...one end of the spring is j-shaped and captures the rod. The other is straight and lays into the groove. I'll bet that the j-end on the right has come off the rod.

thanks tom but it looks like the sping only came out of its place after the pawls inverted. looking at it a little closer it looks like it has a little extra play here and there and maybe that translated to just enough for it to do what it did.
im just pissed they are not standing by there product. they offered me another one for almost half price but not sure i wanna spend $109 prob plus shipping, for something thats going to happen in another year.
who makes the cast aluminum one you were talking about?

I have two of those red More Power Pullers. They have paid for themselves over and over again. Looks like your spring just got inverted. Might be something that should retain it, which might have gotten broken or something. (You may have to play out some cable to make room for the lever to pass the spool.) Neither of mine have ever done that. I bought a length of 3/8" Amsteel Blue to replace the cable on my older one, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

its not the spring , it started to bind as i was pulling, and it somehow jumped the tooth and is facing the wrong way.(didnt really jump but pivoted over the tooth) the only way to get it to be where it is supposed to be is to get it to jump the gear back in the other direction, believe me i tried to turn it every other way.
if it was a bolt instead of a rivet holding it together i would of just unbolted it flipped it and be on my way.
thanks for the input anyway..

did you notice any kind of slop at the pivot for the handle? im starting to think that little bit of slop let this happen.

thanks

Hang in there man it's a simple fix so don't take a hammer to it just yet! Its a good tool and worth keeping.
