2ton ratchet puller failure

[ QUOTE ]
chain hoist doesnt sound like a bad alternative considering u had two guys hanging on the thing without a problem, for some reason anything with a chain always kind of bothered me a little bit (weakest link theory) but id be willing to give it a shot.
for now ive been messing with my winch a little i think im gonna give it a whirl next time i need some pulling help. i gotta a spare battery, and cables.
wanna to a test to see if its gonna start twisting under heavy load.. ill have to use a short strap i guess. anyone ever try this?

Mine looks very similar. I have a hitch hook off a truck that I pin into the hitch slot. Wrap a rope 3 or 4 times around the tree and hook the winch to it. Works great, but it's definitely heavy to lug around in the woods. I have a set of cables that will reach from one end of my truck to the other so I can hook it on the truck's receiver and run cables to the front to power it. I never had a problem with it, but have never done any extended pulling with it either. I can tell you when pulling repetitively down in the woods, a battery is heavy to lug back and forth to the charger!

i also have the quick connects on the truck. how long do you think the battery would last in the woods? if it works out i was thinking about getting a deep cycle marine. it would prob only be used for tipping a back leaner or pull down a storm damaged hanger or leaner, which shouldn't be longer than a min or two at best.

I was using a battery off my tractor last year, and it was a year out of date. I could pull one tree (heavy leaner), and then have to take it back to the charger to charge while I rigged the next tree.

On the heavy red oak, I had a piece of 3/4" Stable Braid tied into a continuous loop through a primary fork. In the pull end of the loop, I had the big ISC block, and a piece of 9/16" Stable Braid running from a tree, through the block, and back to a porty, which I use to interface with the winch. This gave the winch a 2:1, which it desperately needed with the weak battery. I had two other lines in the tree, each hooked to one of the pullers. I had to inch it with the winch, get a couple of clicks on each puller, then repeat. A newer/stronger battery would have made it much easier for sure.

Running electric winches off of typical batteries is a good way to kill the batteries. It'll leave you wanting in pulling power too.

Batteries shouldn't be discharged below about half of their capacity. Do that too often and you'll kill the battery, even if it's brand new.

Having a high amp alternator AND a large capacity primary battery might do the job.

I haven't had issues with regular batteries. I know the benefits of deep-cycle batteries, but most of them only have a year warranty. I just use regular batteries for truck, tractor, boat, camper, you name it. If it goes bad before the date, they replace it. And I can't tell that trolling motors, etc cause premature failure at all. Been using them for years. And cheaper than deep-cycle to boot!

I have one of these that I pin into the receiver of the winch mount. I wrap a rope several times around a tree for bit, then hook two or more loops of the rope in the hook. I have more problem with the winch twisting to one side and crossloading the cable. (Piling up on one side of the spool). The winch will be suspended, and so has some play side-to-side. You have to sort of keep an eye on it. I usually play out the cable after the job is over and reload the cable neatly to avoid pinches in it. But no issues with the winch twisting.

I like having the resistance feeling through a 4:1. If two guys can't pull over a huge back leaner with a fat hinge I take the top or back off before pulling. Careful with powerful winches and a climber in the tree. Read about a couple deaths here in awakenings from that. Also the hinge can blow sometimes if you push it too far. I started out pulling with an 8000lb warn winch but just use the 4:1 now. Seems to be enough power.

The Maasdam rope puller sometimes rigged with multiple blocks works great for me. Or the GRCS when appropiate.
