I would also like to point out the notches he made for the straps to go in. This will prevent them from slipping off the top or in the springtime the bark slipping off with the straps.
You should definitely get another tie in point it is not good to have fiber rope attached directly to load line
The fray also needs to be addressed it is not good and should have been taken care of.
Do you have a better pic of your attachment to the load line? It appears it is rope tied directly to it. Also the tail of the load line needs to be addressed it is frayed bad
Another option is to tie into the Head(boom tip) of the crane. I will try to get a picture later. with this method the crane operator can boom up and hoist down and rotate to provide you with a better boom angle. I hope this makes sense. Ill try to get some pictures later.
The key is to know your numbers. What does it cost you to operate for a week,a month? What do you want for a profit and future purchases. What does the client get for your service? Peace of mind, hassle free interaction, the job done right with no cost to fix things? These are worth extra money.
Snap or by pass cuts are very effective cuts. The key is to not be too thick between the cuts or as previously stated the crane will need to apply to much pressure and cause a shock load. They are also very useful for new cutters with cranes until they gain more experience
I’ve been working with cranes since 1989. Boom trucks, hydraulic, and. articulating They all have there place.the key is to find what is going to be best for you and your work style and company. I have been operating a k boom since 2007. It works well for me and is amazing what they can do...
With the Gierkink head(which is what Altec is selling) once the cut is made it can be kept in the vertical position if it is not too heavy. It is a matter of not returning the paddle used to operate the sawcompletely to the neutral position
So am I wrong or should a crane operator wear a hard hat(not in a cab)
I have seen posts elsewhere by several training organizations of operators taking a test on boom trucks and kbooms with no PPE. Isn’t that where the education begins. No PPE = no certification IMHO. What are your thoughts.
Its frustrating when you cant find a reason for something going wrong. Thank you for sharing it will definitely be something to keep an eye on. I usually only use it when it is a big piece the sling wont fit around singularly.
There is multiplication of the force to the sling as well.
if the force on the load at the attachment point is 1.25x then the sling will have to hold that 1.25 x as well as the hook.
I would like to respond to the saw drifting down on the gierkink. This was my impression also until I talked to and. Watched an operator using one. He showed me how to operate it so the saw doesn’t drift down after the cut so that is not an issue once the piece is cut. There are other...
It might not be faster per say but with less men it is more cost effective. You are also comparing 2 different size cranes. My k boom will out pick that 30 ton stick especially as the radius increases. The kboom also needs less boom out to reach over obstacles to get the same radius reach.
