    Lock stitching accident

"Captain Blood" by Rafael Sabatini (along with others in his series) is another jolly good read about the late surgeon Peter Blood. He was a compassionate pirate, whose passing was mourned by many.

    Saw Won’t Cut Straight

What a coincidence! Those also happen to be the last recorded words muttered by Captain Edward John Smith in 1912. You just cant make this stuff up!

    Saw Won’t Cut Straight

The fundamental problem here is that you are operating a.......{{{{shudder}}}}Husqvarna and not a Stihl. This error in judgement, although monumental, can be cured. That aside, I've noticed the depth guages (aka rakers) on new chains to frequently be high and need lowering right from the get...

    Hobbs device

One other mod I would like to do is to mount a spring of some sort to the pawl for when you are mounting the Hobbs to a tree, esp. a large dia. tree by yourself. Your hands are kinda occupied trying to hold the Hobbs in place, while using the bar to tighten the strap. Since that damn pawl...

    Hobbs device

No, you would have to drill bar size holes in the socket to use the bar. But you can slide the pipe handle of the bar over the handle of the ratchet to provide lotsa leverage. And vice versa for tightening up the strap securing the Hobbs to the tree.

    Hobbs device

I tried to drill into the socket using both HSS and a (cheap) cobalt bit. No love there. Used some 5/16" hex head bolts. forgot to mention I've had some good size weighty chunks and butt ends of limbs whack the Hobbs (by accident not intent), and that sucker is definitely robust enough to take...

    Hobbs device

the socket I used was slightly oversize, and used a bench grinder or sanding disc (can't remember which) to get it whittled down a bit. It was a tight fit (hammer needed). Drilled and tapped a couple of holes to bite into socket. Used red loctite on both socket and gib screws. Have had zero...

    How Many Misses......

I usually manage to get the bag stuck after 5 or 6 misses. Often accompanied by spectators watching the trainwreck.

What do you enjoy about tree work?

Yup. Climbed and dimantled this sucker today. Big live top. (with the help of my hooker) It felt more solid than it appeared. That hollow was about 35' up.

    Redemption

10+ years ago took down a large basswood by a septic bed. Uneventful. Client (a doctor) calls me a day or so later, says we must have cracked a pipe cause ground is saturated. What a coincidence! Great!!! I become an archeologist and excavate the area with trusty shovel. Arborist becomes mole...

    Achilles and the Tortoise

I completed a quotation that turned into a 2 hour tree marking marathon. When I arrived at the property, I noticed a couple of small crowded / leaning trees and saplings that had been flagged, and it lulled me into feeling that we were singing from the same hymnbook. Which disappared after she...

One Handing a Top Handle Chain Saw? Yes or No

As I speedily one-handed (and handily, it must be said) the other day, I felt a twinge of remorse because of the disapprobation of my learned 2-handed peers.
