    Invasive Species Removal?

I bought the brush cutter attachment for my echo battery dpas2600 powerhead and it works great for small pear, honeysuckle, barberry, multiflora rose and grasses. I dig up and uproot everything I can, but if it’s too big for that I zap it with this and stump treat. Basically just a circular saw...

    Ohio TCC 2025

I’m planning to be there Saturday to watch. Alum Creek Campground would probably be about 25-30 minutes away from the Ohio State arboretum I’m guessing. There might be someplace closer to camp in a smaller park in Columbus. Maybe ask if they will allow camping at the Arboretum?

    Pesticide Spill Story

Yeah, I didn’t think about that. Might end up a mess.

    How's the work flow?

Some stuff has already trickled in this morning. I think I’m usually about 5 weeks backlogged this time of year and I’m probably 2 maybe 3 weeks right now. People seem to need a little extra persuasion this season which I’m not good at. Hopefully it’s just a slow start and things shape up for...

    Pesticide Spill Story

Banner Sales posted this story in a recent email newsletter. I’ve always thought this is one major advantage to using kioritz style soil injectors and trunk injection equipment as opposed to driving around with hundreds of gallons of pesticide or fertilizer. Truck Safety Tip A story about a...

    How's the work flow?

Slower than normal for this time of year. Almost caught up on my spring PHC, and by this time a lot more pruning and planting has usually trickled in. I’m starting to worry people aren’t spending money on trees right now and other companies might be bidding lower than normal? I’ve got some...

    Vertical bark splitting-green giant

I’ve noticed dawn redwood are susceptible to winter damage in Ohio as well. Sometimes they almost look stunted.

    Vertical bark splitting-green giant

Just a follow up on this post. Some of the splits totally closed over and the worst ones hopefully will be closed by the end of this growing season. I’m definitely convinced it was the Arctic blast we had that winter that cracked my kitchen window.

Documentation becomes more important than real world accomplishments

Nice! Thanks for sharing. I’ll save this to refer to as needed. Covers a wide range of topics. Here’s a link to a document I’ve used over the years when working with developers and builders. There might be a better resource out there. I was given a hard copy of this when I went to a couple...

Documentation becomes more important than real world accomplishments

Well said! I wonder what specifications for what contractors were eligible to bid on the Columbus planting project were in the grant requirements….. I’ve seen documentaries about other big city tree planting initiatives where millions of dollars end up being wasted. So sad. I’m proud of the...

Documentation becomes more important than real world accomplishments

Let’s just start with talking about root flares at every green industry (including lawn care) educational conference for the next 10 years. Once we get that down, we can move onto more complex subjects.

Documentation becomes more important than real world accomplishments

Has anyone else ever noticed how we seem to live in a time when documenting a project becomes more important than the project itself? For example, Tree City USA. This is an accreditation program that certifies municipalities as a “tree city” if they meet certain requirements. I have to assume...

I got these for $10 a shirt. I’ll pay that much or more to have my logo put on them.

    Arborwear store

Visited the Arborwear store in Chagrin Falls, Ohio on Monday. It was pretty cool. Good deals in the clearance area. I just got a couple $10 work shirts but they have saddles, chainsaw pants & boots etc to try on. There’s a waterfall in the middle of the town.

    Trailer hitch carried sprayer?

Pretty cool! I like these types of small scale effective solutions. What sprays/diseases do you see using it for mostly? The usual suspects? spruce, crabapples, the random bagworms and whatever else pops up?

    Leaving chips onsite

I figure this topic relates closely to the “what’s your small equipment set up” post where we talked about small chippers and small scale operations that mostly focus on pruning. I’m wondering how many out there are successful with leaving chips on site. I know this isn’t applicable to tree...

    Very Honest Arborist Podcast

My least favorite part of offering planting as a service is locating and purchasing the trees from the nursery. If I had the space and could grow my own trees, I think it would be easy to sell them to customers because for the most part customers depend on us to tell them what species would work...
