I put together a spider leg balancer line using 1/4 inch Amsteel. I was concerned that my prussik would slip using Amsteel, so I covered the prussik eye with the cover from some 11.7 kernmantle climbing rope. I'm hoping it gives it decent grip on my rigging line. I did a locking brummel splice...
I've heard that Marlow splicing tape is thinner, slicker, and more flexible than other tape (like vinyl electrical tape). The few places I've found it for sale want more for shipping than the cost of two rolls of tape. Is it really the bees knees for splicing or is vinyl tape nearly as good?
I'm confused about the terminology. Does the term kernmantle just mean there's a braided cover and some kind of a core?
Are all 16 strand ropes cover dependent, or are there some exceptions?
If a rope is core dependent, is the core always braided? Exceptions?
I always thought parallel core...
For that particular removal I didn't care if the hinge bent or broke clean (which it did) or barberchaired. I just didn't want it to go while I was getting down out of the tree. My goal was to make it weak enough to go with the amount of pull I could put on it.
I'd second (or third) the recommendation to not leave a hinge that's too thick. I posted a thread about a hinge breaking and not bending. If I remember right, the hinge was about 3 inches thick on a 10 inch diameter stem. Dead ash tree.
I like the idea of getting rid of the limbs with a pole saw, especially if it's a powered pole saw (I'm a wimp). Drilling the trunk where you can reach it to find out how solid it is seems like another good idea. After that, you might consider a sideways cut if you can reach the trunk easily...
I finally got it buried. It seemed like just giving it a day loosened things up just enough to do the last little bit without too much of a struggle. Thanks for all the suggestions. ghostice, I agree. After all the stress I've put on it, I would not use it for life support. It's going to be used...
I've milked the cover slack toward the eye several times by hand, but not with a prussik. I even pulled 6 inches of core from the opposite end of the rope and milked the whole 70 feet of rope (by hand) to try to get a little more room in the cover at the eye. I tried tying the rope between two...
I got almost all of the final bury done. Only about 1/4 inch left to bury. My hands gave up for now.
Good thought about the KY drying or not. It did seem to make a difference. I'm soaking the splice in water right now to rinse it out. I'll work the splice by flexing it several times and...
I did zero out the core and cover before I started. I will try some KY and beating on it more. Thanks.
If I need to do another one (likely) I will use Samson's method.
I chose the Atlantic Braids method because it uses a cover bury instead of seizing the cover to the throat of the splice. It just seemed like a cleaner finish.
I used Atlantic Braids splicing instructions for a Class II eye splice, and I'm having an incredibly difficult time doing the final bury. I've tried all the tricks I know, and still have about a half- to three quarters-inch to go. I have beat on the throat of the splice many, many times with a...
When I was growing up (1950s and '60s) we had some large trees in our back yard. We used to climb them all the time. The younger branches had smooth bark, but the trunks had plates of bark that curled out a little. Not as shaggy as a hickory, but sort of similar plates. My parents always called...
Something else I'm going to try. For those ropes that have a core is to remove the core for the first foot or so. Tie the throwline to the skinnier, more flexible part of the rope (without the core). That should make it easier to pull the beginning of the bigger rope through the union. If the...
Is my understanding of frictional forces really screwed up? I though that the amount of friction was proportional to the area of contact for a given surface. Is that wrong?
