Yeah, something like that might work fine, if not too expensive to come up with. My main criteria with doing any of this is to not have to actually buy anything as far as possible, but just work with what can be scrounged or salvaged. I will keep a watch on the local recycle yards for any...
We were discussing these things over in rec climbing in a thread about climbing without a lanyard to save gear weight, and Tom suggested a separate thread about it since they seem very useful. Several brands of these so-called pack wheels are available for hiking with heavy gear loads, but none...
What I got in the habit of doing, since I hadn't snapped to this kickstand idea back then, whas to lock the brake handle and lean the handlebars around the tree I was going to climb, or a nearby one, and run a bungee around the tree to hold it there. But a proper kickstand of some kind would be...
Yes, I did not come up with this idea. I saw a guy using one on a hike in the Cascades but he told me what it cost and I thought of my old mountain bike I quit using years ago. Why pay hundreds for something I could cobble together myself with some pleasant tinkering?
Great idea, Tom. There is bound to be a way to rig a kickstand. I also had the idea, for steep uphill parts of a hike, to sort out how to motorize it, using the same big DeWalt cordless drill I use on my power ascender. This is one of the best attributes of our RollGliss-based power ascenders...
I often have to hike quite a ways to a tree, so cutting bulk with kit in the backpack has been an ongoing goal. I made up a very lightweight 8 ft lanyard of 9mm rock climbing stuff and a smaller DIY version of surveyor's BOLA, which has been great. The whole thing will almost wad up in a coat...
I normally wrap the end of my lanyard around over my left shoulder to advance the BDB to ascend. But if I am using my PMI chest roller, the Bone just rides on top of it. Love my two Bones! I often use them both, one on each end of a 90 ft piece of line with an eye in each end, for leap...
I have the same Vortex only the cool instead of the hot. Love the feel in my hands and it knots well. But it is harder to stuff that big rope thru the ZigZag!
I ordered one of those big California swivels from CMI when I saw the sale price (basically approx. half price) and it came in today. Wow, big it certainly is. For anyone worried about a swivel being the weak link in the gear chain, this is the swivel for you! And I like the nice big wide...
Here is a youTube I uploaded some years ago showing a quick demo ascent with mine, taking it on and off the rope at height, etc. I advance my BDB on top of it and use two rope bridges on my Onyx, the main one adjustable for length with the Bone and the lower fixed bridge for the RollGliss if I...
I love my modded Rollgliss. I have used it dozens of times now and get great battery life with a 5ah hour battery on the big 1/2 in. DeWalt drill. Very quickly midline attachable, works with every single rope I have tried with it, even some 9mm rock climbing stuff. And with a quick turn on...
Lots of photos on here if you do a search. I think there is even a good used one for sale right now on TreeBay. Our Buzz member Surveyor makes and sells them.
Don't forget the BDB (BullDogBone, from Surveyor here on the Buzz). These things will take a hell of a beating and are quickly mid-line attachable. Simple robust construction and very tough. Still pays to be careful with it, keep it clean and sap-free, etc. but it is bloody hard to hurt one...
Hey Evo, that would be great! I am on Lopez myself in fact, just 600 yards from the ferry landing. Let me know what day you are coming, once you know, so I can plan around it and be free at the time.
