    My daughter

Yeah, it rather sucks if you outlive your only child. And we were bloody close since her Mom passed. It's been good therapy to get up a tree as often as I can since it happened, but there will probably always be a touch of sadness to it for me from now on. Right, well it is good to be back...

    My daughter

Hi All, sorry I have been absent for quite a while now. It has been a rough summer. My favourite rec climbing companion was my daughter any time she was home for a visit. She was back last Fall for three weeks and we had some great climbs together. Last one was special because she was headed...

Question MRS DdRT vs. SRS SRT

Just came in on the 'tail' end of this today and have not read them all as yet. Did anyone mention rope retrieval? Really easy with MRS, just unhook and pull it back to you over the limb. No extra pull-down to rig or fore thought involved. The other difference to me, although I am sure this...

A question about maneuvering into a tree...

I just had a rotten experience last week doing this harbour-seal/monkey thing over and past a big fir limb almost the size of my waist. Chilly day and I was in a long sleeved shirt. So, it turned out that the top side of this limb was covered with fresh sap that had dripped from somewhere...

Advancing rope too high to reach (another option for captain hook, magbag, or the like)

Here are a couple of photos of my 'Conifer Climber' that I made for a few of us several years ago. I might gear up to make a few more of these soon, if there is interest. I would need a couple hundred for one (shipped free in the Lower 48) and customer would supply there own pole(s). My own...

    Rec harness?

Yes, the pulley is still in place in the loop, although I mainly use the saddle now as a guest saddle if anyone wants to climb with me. The pulley has really saved wearing out the webbing loop. I still have the Yellow Jacket too, mainly if I have to hike any distance, since it wads up so small...

    Happy New Year!

Yes, indeed, here is hoping for a great New Year for us all in 2022, hopefully a vast improvement over the last two which positively sucked to a large degree. On a personal level, I am celebrating my girl friend's recovery. She caught the damn Covid from her son a week after Thanksgiving but...

    Sticht Hitch

There is a place for independent thinking; this is how innovation happens. But it is also silly to re-invent the wheel, as the saying goes. Innovation needs to go hand in glove with others' advances and progress. This guy has clearly never tried simple rope walking with current practice and...

Anxiety / Hesitancy about Climbing Bigger and Taller Trees

Good luck to you, Monkey, and best holiday wishes to all you chaps. Cheers, Stewart

Anxiety / Hesitancy about Climbing Bigger and Taller Trees

I can say for sure that my fear of heights is definitely due to my age. I had no trouble with heights right thru my forties and fifties, and did a lot scarier stuff than my rec tree climbing year after year for a living, on shipyard gantry cranes, offshore drilling rigs, etc. And we had gear...

Anxiety / Hesitancy about Climbing Bigger and Taller Trees

I second that recommendation. I started using a seond rope and system in those taller trees that triggered my fear and it has really helped a lot to feel that much safer. And the coffee thing too. Lots and lots of coffee. Enough of the stuff and you won't even care what happens. LOL.

My $60 air cannon line launcher....WOW!!

Yes, you drill a hole then tap it for 1/4" NPT pipe thread for the blow gun. I got my tap at Ace Hardware. And there are a couple of small holes inside that have to be plugged. The whole mod just takes half an hour at most. There are at least two youTubes on doing it if you do a search there.

Anxiety / Hesitancy about Climbing Bigger and Taller Trees

I have noticed I have a lot less confidence and more fear of heights than I had when younger, but it may just be my age and the fact that I am not in the same shape I was twenty years ago. I had zero fear of heights as a young man and worked at all sorts of dangerous stuff, often with what...

    Pearl Harbor memories

I guess so, and hopefully it is not over with yet! I am certainly enjoying my recreational tree climbing and I owe most all of what I know about it to you guys.

    Pearl Harbor memories

I did not always climb trees! I thought you guys would enjoy this old photo of me when I was a tug skipper down South in the early 1970's. I owned an old ex-USN tug which had been at Honolulu just East of Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941. She was a torpedo net tending tug USS COCKENOE, YN-47, and...

    BDB with Vortex Cool?

Yes, The Bone does not compare favourably to lack tending with my Zigzags with their big lower pulleys. But works well enough for me on the Cool. And of course the ZZ's are not midline attachable which is often a major PITA.

    Struggling with srt

I had the same issues constantly at first with SRT, from being older and a bit more top heavy than I was years ago. A PMI chest roller made all the difference, especially since my first saddle was a single front suspension point, New Tribe Yellow Jacket. with the PMI I could walk up a rope...
