    Work Photos

This water oak planted by the homeowner in 1989. It has a wide canopy with no central leader. I had to redirect once but, had to move my TIP and climb 3x to get the long branches over the 2 story roof. Walking up some of the branches at a steep angle tough. It was a pretty tiring day.

    Today....

Nice help from Mother Nature. Easy job and the burn pile <20ft. Worked 1.5 hours and I’m done for the day. It’s Friday!

    Dump trailer and Powerhorse Chipper

It’s a fail on this idea with my 10ft dump. I actually got the tractor backed in the trailer. I forgot all about the hydraulic top link. I bought the top link to rotate the stump grinder when loading so it doesn’t drag. Same process backing . The 400lbs hanging off the rear is just too much. It...

    Certified tree climber certification evaluator

It’s true that it’s harder than it should be. I know a couple people who have been climbing for years and let their certification lapse during Covid and haven’t been able to get it renewed. I had to resubmit my paperwork several times to get everything done. I really don’t see why I have to take...

    Certified tree climber certification evaluator

I probably just need to find out who the judge was for the work climb. Maybe they could sign me off. I got the AR and CPR recently. I was just notified that my application was approved for the written test. WooHoo.

    Cleaning pine sap from gear

I don’t climb too many conifers and sappy trees. After about days in white pines my stuff is really dirty. I had to pull with both hands to get my friction cord to release getting down. Everything has sap, chainsaw pants, saddle you name it. I’m not happy but, how can I get this stuff clean.

    Dump trailer and Powerhorse Chipper

Yes it’s a 5x10 at 2800lbs. I’m going to do some measurements again and I’ve looked at some light weight 14ft dumps. I tow it with my single cab Ram 5.7 with max tow 3.92 gears special order. No I don’t want another truck. I’ll leave wood or debris on site when possible. The chips are nice size...

    Dump trailer and Powerhorse Chipper

Don’t want one or need one for my solo operation. I just wanted one to lessen the amount of brush to carry off.

    Dump trailer and Powerhorse Chipper

Yes it’s too much weight on the back of the trailer even when fully loaded. The tongue is too short to go on the front. I thought about reducing rear weight by removing the stump grinder but, then I’ll loose the counter weight for the grapple.

    Dump trailer and Powerhorse Chipper

@Merle Nelson linked me to a video that Reg had a small chipper on the back of his truck. I took that idea and came up with my version. The 5” chipper/shredder is from Northern Tool. The chipper works great and creates small chips/shreds. We chipped about 3.5 yards in no time. Chip photo during...

    Structural pruning

Just curious about your choice of leader? Was it because the center branch was poorly attached or why?

    Structural pruning

Homeowner decided to have it hacked. I’ll take a photo the next time I’m in that neighborhood.

    Today....

Glad you found one. I bought one in December for $215 plus tax on clearance at HD. I used it again Friday and even cut a 12” branch. It worked as long as you don’t force it. I do like to prune with it. I’m watching for another battery on clearance too!

    New Grapple by Reg Coates

I went up to cut a large branch but, changed my mind and decided I should cut small. My TIP wasn’t as high as it should have been. Too flat and a lot of core and balancing. I tossed the RC grapple out the branch to give me some tension forward and my system rearward. I walked out and sat down on...

    Memphis Southern ISA

I “was” going to watch the competition but, now I get to pay for a hotel room that I can’t use. I’m going to try to get money back tomorrow. It’s probably best because the weather is getting be rough. We had an EF1 and EF2 in our county this week. We’re under a watch now and warnings west...

    Structural pruning

I’m not sure what to do with this tree that homeowner says is an Oak. The existing structure isn’t Oak like. Is this a case of doing the Gillman pruning. Going out each branch and pruning the larger limb? Homeowner wants it reduced and not hacked like the one in the picture background. It has...
