The carabiner is a secure line mini camouflage gear clip. It is about 2" long. Its gate does not lock. It is in no way rated for life support. My thinking is that the small prusik loop and tiny carabiner are only to operate the hitch pulley. If the carabiner fails the worst thing would be...
Yesterday, I got a hitch pulley, an e2e, and an o ring. So I had to go and try out the O-rig system.
I decided to use a distel hitch. I ended up with 6 turns above and 1 turn below. This makes the hitch very compact and the hitch holds good and releases very controlled with only 2 fingers...
Moss you are scaring me now. I have been getting the rope over a limb and being happy. Maybe now I need to get the rope over a limb and then back around the tree so if the limb lets go then the rope would catch on the next lower limb. I am a little lazy so I may just try to pick good limbs...
Oldoakman gave me a panten and today I got to try it out. I liked the panten and it was much easier to climb with than the foot loop prusik.
I need to find a way that I can also use my left leg for climbing. Maybe I need a panten for my left foot. I could alternate between legs this way...
It has been an intense week of research on climbing for me.
Thank all for your thoughts and help. I placed an order today. I will be using the low and slow technique until I get things working correctly. It may take a long time to learn how to use things to their full advantage but I am...
I saw another technique that may solve my concerns. It was referred to as an O rig. This method keeps all the knots below the pulley so that nothing interfers with the friction hitch.
Oceans, I apologize for being all over the place. My current climbing system is using the rope end to tie a...
Oceans you gave me an idea. How would this work? If I tie a double figure 8 knot with the loop about 3 feet long and then use a band to close the end like a tight eye, would this get all the knotted part of the line high enough above the friction knot so that it would not cause problems.
I...
I tied the double fisher mans loop that you linked to. I was thinking that a double fisherman knot was typically used to join lines. Thanks for making sure that I was using the correct knot.
I might remove the stopper knot after I use the knot for a while but it makes me nervous not having a...
I like how the double fisher man knot is so compact and the rope end exits the knot in the same direction as the support rope. I tied the knot and a figure 8 stopper knot and it looks like it would work fairly well.
The end of my rope is already beat up because I have been tying blakes hitches into the ends. I may have to be satisfied with using an anchor knot or with tying a double figure 8 with a 2 foot long loop for connecting to the hitch pulley carabiner.
I had to try to do another splice in the boat...
Oldoakman, the weather here is wonderfully wet. No ice for us. My bother in law above Atlanta has a tree across his fence. This ice is probably going to cause major power outages in the Atlanta area.
I think this Sunday is going to be good weather here so I am going to go out and try out the...
Re: Pro\'s and con\'s of Carabiners and screw hardware
Thanks Tom, Moss, and JontreeHI. I now feel more comfortable with the screw delta link. I have a couple of screw gate carabiners and I have found them unscrewing a few times. I don't like using them but I do use them for some things.
I have been researching the splice rack and looking at videos for most of the day.
My rope looks like the blue streak. The blue streak is 16 stand. I was looking at my rope and it looks like it only has 8 strands. Maybe what I am thinking is one strand is actually 2 strands. The blue...
Well my rope is blue and white. I saw another video and I am now thinking that it may be 16 strand sampson arborist. I am just guessing.
I do need to do some searching on here to see what I can find. I asked some questions with no replies as of now so maybe my questions are so simple and...
Re: Pro\'s and con\'s of Carabiners and screw hardware
Yes this information helps. Now I know why my delta link has a hex nut for closing the gate. It is designed to be tightened with plyers. If I remember correctly I was told to tighten the delta link finger tight and the back it off about...
Sampson uses different techniques for splicing class 1 and class 2 rope. From what I see class 1 rope breaks at 6% stretch or greater and Class 2 rope breaks at less that 6% stretch. Does this mean static line is a class 2 line and therefore the class 2 technique needs to be used?
Pro\'s and con\'s of Carabiners and screw hardware
Screw hardware seems to be less expensive than say a locking screw carabiner. I like the idea of having a multi action carabiner so that there is less chance of the gate opening by itself.
My current set up uses a screw delta where it hooks...
Since I climbed with oldoakman, I have been thinking about splicing an eye on the end of my life line. I might want an eye on each end.
Oldoakman showed me a eye to eye that he had spliced and it looked pretty good.
Today I decided to see what I could learn about splicing. I took a look at...
Today was the day that I got to climb with Mr oldoakman. It was a great experience for me. If I remember correctly, I got to see the 2nd largest willow oak in Ga.
We drove out to Oxbow Meadows Environmental park to do our climbing. When we get there Eric starts pulling a wheel barrow out of...
