I agree, Nick. That big green one looks good, but I have a question....if you're running the two ropes together, as Reg's vids show, it seems to me there's a risk of them crossing up, as they're both running toward the center. The Stein has its two bollards facing the operator, and thus there is...
The medium is great for in-tree usage when you have only 1 groundie. I have used mine aloft several times. It does take more wraps, and heats up quicker than a large. I like using it alone up top....no block. Simply rig the porty in a good spot above the target limb, and usually 3 wraps, just...
Glad you're coming around, but I still disagree that the TIP sees the load doubled when the climber pulls himself up. If another person pulls him up, the load is doubled. But if he is pulling himself up, how can he double his own weight? As he pulls on one leg, weight is transferred temporarily...

Leave the books on the shelves...get a fish scale and fake-up a mini-climbing system.
This discussion has gone on for many years. Until you see it with a scale or dyno its hard to understand.

Okay, when our 7-year-old was born, (at home), we used a digital fishing scale...

Tom, time to dig up some of those old threads and blow the dust off of them again.

Might dig out the old spectacles and physics books while we're at it. And post some diagrams to make sure we're all on the same page.
Surely we are having a misunderstanding here! Surely you don't believe that a climber's weight is doubled a the TIP just because he is using Ddrt? Again, we are not talking about dynamics, but static conditions. Hang anything you want, from any scale you want, with as many lines as you want, and...

The big difference with Ddrt and SRT basal tie off, is when you go to move with Ddrt up or in you need 101 lbs of force to move 100 lbs. meaning the high point will see that force doubled (for the most part). With SRT basal tie off unless the line is doing a 180 back to the tie off it...

Born,
The TIP loads, even static, are a bit hard to understand. There have been many studies done using dynamometers to capture the climbers load at the TIP. The numbers are impressive...and high! Sometimes tripling the static load of that 165# climber.

Maybe so, but the...

If you do that remember that the stub left needs to be solid enough to handle over twice your weight, where as with a DDrt system, the stub will experience your weight (body, tools, etc) with srt it will experience twice that load. -Steve

My oldest portie is several years old, but I still natural crotch lots of stuff. Once the weight of the piece to be lowered exceeds 600#-700#, I prefer the bollard. I'm sure negative blocking the big stuff Reg deals with takes a toll on a portie.

I made a spud gun a while back, but the police didn't think sing it to play a game of "baseball" was as good of an idea as I did, and informed discharging ANY firearm, yes including a nerf gun, is illegal within city limits... But the police in the suburb where I live are always bored...
After taking two half hitches, I do whatever is necessary to deal with the excess tail. As it is not load bearing, it makes no difference how it is dealt with, so long as it is kept from interfering with the rigging.

If your VT keeps slipping, try a softer cordage. I still think Tenex is THE best hitch cord for a VT... it's cheap and easy to splice too.

How long will an I2I made of Tenex last? I use Ice, and it's holding up pretty well. I was always afraid Tenex would burn up pretty...
I've never had a problem with the bowline, but if you prefer a little more security, the yosemite bowline will give it....http://www.netknots.com/html/yosemite_bowline.html.
I usually use multiple rigging points in order to space out the debris so ground personnel can more effectively keep up. If it all comes down in one spot, at a pretty good rate, it's easy to swamp them. If you take out a piece or two, then switch to another rigging point, you can make it easier...
I just acquired a GRCS a couple of weeks ago, and have yet to use it. I do have a job lined up that will involve several long limbs being tip-tied and winched back from over a church building. Mine, too, came with the Harken 48. I ordered mine with the drill adapter, and bought a second-hand...

If you're burning your hands, the friction device isn't being used to its full potential, IMO. The whole purpose of a lowering device is to take the friction/heat generated lowering situations. Each to his own, but I never wear gloves unless it's so cold I can't stand to work without them. When...
