Air Powered Throwball Launcher

Ok ok... you make a good point. + it isolates the sniffer valve which can leak a bit, slowly losing pressure if you disconnect the pump at high PSI.

BUT it costs an extra 20-30$

Some shooters like their gun to fire if you just breathed on the trigger by having adjustable triggers.
I could see that lever valve causing accuracy problems. It would add cost but to get percision I'm thinking there'd be some gizmo that would act like a firearm trigger.

223Tree: that extra $20-30 comes back to the description of paying for a big shot.... you can get the basic Big shot, or pay a little more and get the quick release and a prusik to hold it in place, while it all does the same in the end, it does seem to make it operator friendly.
I do not want to come across as shooting down your system (no pun intended) for mine... I am just looking at the two designs purely on a functional level.

Boreality: A simple solenoid valve would work for that... electronic and all that needs to be done would be press a button or a trigger.
A more realistic approach might be to just attach a spring to the ball valve lever, it remains under tension and when a clasp/latch is activated, the spring pulls open the valve at a faster and more consistent rate?

I retired my pneumatic throwbag gun simply because I believe in the "Keep it Simple Stupid" principle.

Having a pneumatic gun's wow factor wore off pretty quick for me. A big shot accomplishes the same thing more cheaply, quietly, and with far less potential for disaster if something goes wrong with the gun's components.

I still have my gun. It still works great. But it's gathering dust in the bottom of my toolbox now.

I made a spud gun a while back, but the police didn't think sing it to play a game of "baseball" was as good of an idea as I did, and informed discharging ANY firearm, yes including a nerf gun, is illegal within city limits... But the police in the suburb where I live are always bored and looking for somebody to hassle; I'm sure other places are more lenient than here.

There's some interesting stuff on this website that is probably applicable to what y'all are talking about.

The gun I made is similar to their QE19 and it works pretty stinkin' well.

The bottom right is a schrader valve (for a bike pump). The bottom left is a pneumatic hose coupler with a valve on the end to release pressure if needed. If you have a compressor, you can stick the air hose right on there instead.

The main valve is actuated by releasing the pneumatic hose coupler.

And yes, I know it's PVC; I am aware of all the dangers and risks of it at high pressure.

I've thought about this because I've never really been satisfied with the big shot. Even with the snap shackle it isn't as accurate, easy to use, and time saving as I'd like it to be. I used to play around with spud guns/pneumatic cannons as a kid. I've met some serious spudders (air gun guys) as well. I'm here to tell ya, you can get as "into" this as you want. Search out spudding forums and you'll have more info than you want to wrap your head around....including pics and undetailed-figure-it-out-if-you're-smart-enough-because-we're-not-giving-all-the-details designs of piston valves that dramatically increase the efficiency of the launcher. Regarding using the truck's air: totally possible without a gauge on the gun...just build the gauge/regulator on to the filling hose. Now add a reliable reel to retrieve/store the throwline and some sort of braking mechanism to stop a throw from going too far (and if you could get all that in to one modular design....how awesome would that be). One day I'll have enough time to play around with this, until then the big shot will have to do I guess.

I believeI would make it a point to inform the local badge-wearing idiot(s) that an important part of a "firearm" is the "fire"....a propellant is "fired" in the operation of a "fire"-arm. I do declare some folks' ignorance and stupidity has been bred, cross-bred, and cultivated til it's gone to seed.

I dont think he was able to understand it is pneumatic, and doesnt use hairspray and a barbeque lighter to launch potatoes. AND, I cant even imagine how he would have reacted to a 16 year old kid telling him he's wrong. just shooting it in the baseball field towards my friends (who were obviously ok with it) was enough for him to escort me home and we got to have a fun little conversation with my parents about "how dangerous weapons should be treated," and how you should NEVER point it in the general direction as other human beings.

As soon as he pulled out of our driveway, my parents just chuckled and told me not to shoot it in public areas. oh well.

Whether or not it is combustion powered or pneumatic, a spud gun is a spud gun in most areas. It doesn't get classified as a firearm in most cases, but instead a "zip-gun." The legality of these devices are generally set by the county, not the fed or state and often illegal to use with in the city limits.....but lots of times there are exceptions made if the cannon is used for a profession. Locals judge such things on a case by case basis a lot of times (especially in rural areas).

Regarding your run in with the police....yeah, at 16 I couldn't get a soul to listen to me either. It's unfair to the 10th degree. You handled the situation very well, and I'm glad your 'rents were as cool as they were. Don't worry bro, let your shadow grow a little longer and authority figures will take you more seriously when you have something to say.

I was thinking that ‘wadding’ should make for more consistent shots with different projectiles. Black Powder shooters use wadding, shotguns use wadding. Wonder if those facial wipe pads that are made for women and finished round might be just the right size?

Anyone getting consistent shots well over 100ft (measured)?

Merle I have had my APTA for over two weeks now and with a 14 oz harrison bag I am consistently achieving a crotch at 80 to 100ft with the psi at around 110.
have pushed the psi up to 160 the bag went clean over the entire tree and came to rest on the ground over the outside of the canopy.
so far I am happy with the performance but can tell there is still moments when the big shot will give a better result in certain circumstances due to site /tree structure etc.
