Rotten silver maple leader fails while I was climbing

Thank you for asking. I healed up quickly and started climbing again after 6 weeks. No longterm pain or meds addiction which were my two concerns. Still paying bills to around $7000 out of pocket with good insurance. The total would have been $102,000 without insurance. Only other...

    Chipper radiator deep cleaning tips?

Twice I have had to drain and take the radiator out of my chipper. Chips and cottonwood fruits had packed the gaps and bent fins on the fan side. I bought a radiator fin comb to straighten the bent fins and carefully used a metal pick to dislodge stuck chips. A lot of medium pressure water...

The Body Language of Trees - A handbook for failure analysis

Yes. Stupsi the Hedgehog. I saw him speak in Ft. Collins 20 years ago. "Shorten the lever-arm". He explains the biomechanics of trees. An engineer who walked his woods in Germany and wrote about what he saw. He was the first man I saw wear Uggs and purple glasses. I learned a ton

    What’s Your SMALLER Equipment Setup?

I haven't owned a disc chipper for a while. Do you think it throws chips better because of the paddles on the disc? I always chip into a truck so not much of a concern

I gouged myself. Not one handing.

    Preferred method for solo rigging

Yes that is about right. Rope in a bag either hung in the tree near me or on my saddle. Usually the first ring a few feet below my left foot. Thread the working end through that ring then the rigging ring under the face cut and tied to the piece. This gives me about a 180° turn on both rings...

    Preferred method for solo rigging

I use 1/2" lowering lines and two rigging rings. One ring below the cut as my primary rigging point and the other below my feet as a friction device. I let it run without having my hands being too close to the rigging

Rotten silver maple leader fails while I was climbing

Our 5000 foot sun is always in your face this time of year and it is hot. Sleeves channel the heat up to my face and cause my glasses to fog. This gun show is free of charge considering how much strength I have lost being stuck on the ground

Rotten silver maple leader fails while I was climbing

Back in the saddle again. Minus 2 points for one-handing. Thank you again for all the well wishes.

    Dawn Redwood Bark Cracks

Any snow events? Or torsion cracks from high winds? Looks like mechanical damage from a few years ago

Resurrection fern growing on asphalt shingles.

Without liability insurance, I would be careful working with chemicals. I have seen a YT video where a pressure washing company smoked all of the shrubs and plants surrounding the house. The applicator did not do a flush wash of the overspray after applying moss killer to the house. The...

"Sag but not break" limb cutting

Girth hitch 2 webbing slings with a biner joining the slings under the cut. Cut straight through and let it hang. Cut pieces off while hanging until it is light enough to handle. Remove slings toss remaining piece and cut off the stub. Or go out on the long lateral. Cut multiple times from...

    Chainsaw pants and climbing

I have had 2 pairs of the cheap Husky saw pants. That is the only time I don't freeball when I'll wear a thin swimsuit underneath. The protection bunches up tight on my thighs and rips the crotch from front to back. Seems like you won't get the performance a climber needs for less than $300.

    What’s Your SMALLER Equipment Setup?

I have run a 6 inch Vermeer before. I rented one when my bc1400 was down. It was so frustrating that I returned it early. If you have straight thin branches it is better than nothing. Prepare to cut apart every crotch. We just finished a Russian olive site clearance job for a builder. I...

Face cuts and staying sharp (pun intended)

You can replicate different felling scenarios with a straight blade handsaw and a pile of branches. Make clean face cuts of different depths and angles. Practice different hinge widths. You can even learn barberchair dangers by securing the butt of the branch and pulling hard on the top...

One of my favorite trees in the neighborhood...

Your favorite tree is looking better than this plains cottonwood. This is at a client's house. Photo was taken by the fire department. I monitored the two trees through the growing season and pruned the large dead wood throughout both canopies. The single stem tree most damaged had about...

Do you have thousand cankers disease there? We have lost most of the big walnuts around here. I seem to remember it starting around 2010. It made for some sketchy removals and pruning

Gas blowers banned in Ann Arbor Mi

This was my reasoning for tarping under the work zone. I got sick of being the first person to rake in years at some of the college rentals around here
