Thanks to everyone for all the input. But now I'm even more confused. Would someone tell me exactly what "the snipe" is? I read the thread posted by TreeLogic and it made me even more confused. Beranek's explanation is not at all clear (sorry Gerry).
And can anyone tell me how much...
I was made aware of this by a guy who said it was the best felling cut he ever used, supposedly because of it's very limited potential to cause the tree to fall the wrong way. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm sold on it. Anyone got any experience with it?
The TX chapter is having their 2015 ITCC qualifier Saturday Oct 4th. Because ITCC has been decoupled from the annual ISA conference for 2015 and 2016, and will be held in March next year, Texas has to have two comps this year in order to have an ITCC rep before March 2015.
In order to not tax...
Yup, 2016 will still be in Texas. For those who don't know, the ITCC and the annual conference are being decoupled for a "trial separation" in 2015 and 2016.
I have recently been informed that ISA has decided that the 2015 ITCC will be in Tampa Bay in early spring (around March). While I know many chapters determine their champion the year before, I am wondering how chapters like ours, that usually choose their champ in the spring of the same year...
Vicente Pena-Molina is the 2014 Texas champ. He beat out defending champ Miguel Pastenes, David Ruiz and Jimmy Pritchard, in that order. Former world champ Jared Abrojena, in town to do a workshop for our chapter, also ran the prelims. Highlites for this year included having prelims in a row...
The Texas comp will be May 16th and 17th, with Sunday the 18th as a rainday. The event will be held in New Braunfels, about half way between Austin and San Antonio on I-35. This is a beautiful small city with one of the nicest city parks in all of Texas, a cool river to relax in, and lots of...
What I have heard in safety classes and videos is that a rear handled saw is preferable for ground work for two reasons: first, more separation of the hands giving better control, and two, they often have longer bars, meaning less bending to reach the work.
Don't know if either is enough...
Thanks everyone. It seems this is a common problem with splicing this type of line. The thread titled "I thought it couldn't be done" is also along these lines. Someone responding there recommended pulling on the eye while milking, and I think Tuttle recommended that too. Someone else said...
This is sort of a revival of a post by Marden back in January. I just tried my first "real" splice (not counting brummels in hollow braid). From what I saw on that thread, maybe poison ivy calamine wasn't the wisest choice, but I had one I bought from Tree Stuff that was nicely spliced on one...
I thought the cord used was the Ocean Vectran - the Treestuff website doesn't say. But John is right that the 8mm is just poly. The new pulleysaver has replaced ocean with sirius which apparently is also just poly. Thanks guys!
Thanks again Tom. I knew you'd have an efficient solution.
If you'd indulge me a bit longer... If I'm correct, Treestuff's Usaver and the pulleysaver both use ocean to prusik the pinto onto the friction saver. Does the information that indicates that the kinds of fibers in the core of this...
Re: Phoenix Arizona arbo\'s?
I agree that cocos seem to withstand this better than washingtonians, sabals and cabbage palms, which is what we usually deal with in TX.
Curious why you say not to spike those.
Re: Phoenix Arizona arbo\'s?
I absolutely mean no offense to anyone here, but spiking of any type of tree for pruning is definitely NOT best management practice, and this includes palms. Unlike dicots, which have a secondary growth point (the cambium), monocots (palms) do not have this. Hence...
Thanks, Tom, but these seem to be install videos. I am wondering about controlled retrieval, that is, not just free falling the USaver out of the tree. With normal ring style FS's, or using the US in a basket config, I just tie a throwline into the splice of my climbing line and after the...
Love all your work with the U-saver. I have searched youtube for retrieval videos and cannot find one that shows an efficient controlled retrieval method that does not include a preinstalled line. Can you advise me? Thanks.
