This is a real fear of mine. As a result I train my staff to carefully mind my lines and also reflect on my choice when purchasing. I use line such as verlocity hot and blaze which not only offer the performance but also sufficient visability within a brash pile
I would retire it immediatley. The damage to the stitching is in a critical area.
As climbinghightree stated it could be due to the orentation of the loading being changed with the addition of the bridge. I hope it earned you enough money to afford a replacement

It sounds like an unfortunate accident to me.
I'm quite concious of how tight I grip handles on the saw with regards to vibration, hence my question.

I always carry a silky when climbing, and I have yet to find a climbing rope that I cannot sever with it. Rescue should be planned using the minimal amount of kit, not what we all should carry in an ideal world
