Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"
Too much line tension here, the limb just about takes him out.
I have had that happen to me usually when raising a tip with the GRCS.
For lowering like that a butt line would have been better.
No, I get it.
You are leaving your truck under a compromised top while you drop down in the bucket below the compromised top then move your truck.
You and your truck are at risk until you can get out of the bucket, in the drivers seat and move the truck.
You might get away with it several times...

you need to put a wide open face in a big top, and are worried about the top therefore over-rotating, and the but kicking back past the trunk,

I can't see how this cut has any effect on the top coming back or rotating.
All the cuts are lower than the apex which won't stop...

I've used it once to pull a large backleaning top into the only possible drop zone, which was right where the bucket was parked.

Granted, but could you not rig the top down in the same amount of time it took to come down and move the truck?
The question comes back to the...
This method doesn't swing the tree to that extent, it does act like a dutchman and will swing the tree without the dangers of dutching.
It uses the standing weight of the tree to pull the tree ahead because there's nothing left to support the weight.
I don't know if they have been using this in...
That soft dutchman works but it's unpredictable as to how far the tree will swing.
I used it a few times last year and it works well in the woods.
It's much like imploding a building with explosives, as the tree begins to fall the weight of the tree collapses in the kerfs and sends the tree off...
That worked ok for what was intended as saving some grinding time on the stump.
Taking a bit of a chance with the narrow drop zone though in my opinion but you aren't the first to do that here.
The only thing I would add is a tag line to control the limb, good work by the ground man.
Boreality, you should change the "We" to "I".

Re: don\'t try this at home
I didn't see this cut below the felling cut the first time, this looks unstable and dangerous.
What was the reason for the lower cut?
Re: Mt Shasta dead 175\' Ponderosa removal
The tree wasn't faced properly.
It missed the opening by several feet.
That could be from a long day and being tired.
