    Free stuff and Sayonara!

Oh damn, am I too late for the diseases of PNW conifers? C'mon what are you two gonna do with that anyway?

    Couple of dicey situations

Great vids, thanks for taking the time to use the helmetcam and to post it up. Pretty rare you actually get to see some of these situations from the faller's POV.

    Teufelberger's new Platinum rope.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope. [ QUOTE ] I agree it's a bit vague. But I assumed that max elongation would occur just prior to MBS. jomoco [/ QUOTE ] That might be what they meant, but it doesn't tell you anything about how it will perform when you put the weight of a climber on it.

    Teufelberger's new Platinum rope.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope. [ QUOTE ] It's understandable that a lifeline would have a 5 percent elongation factor. At least to me anyway. jomoco [/ QUOTE ] Ummm, I don't think you are understanding this. They didn't say it has 5% elongation, they said it has somewhere between...

    Teufelberger's new Platinum rope.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope. [ QUOTE ] I read that as an elongation factor of less than 5 percent. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah but that's preposterously vague. That's like telling me the MBS is between 500 lbs and infinity. 5% stretch will feel like a rubber band; that's almost as much as...

    Teufelberger's new Platinum rope.

Re: Teufelberger\'s new Platinum rope. It drives me crazy the way that teufelburger will not release actual data on the elongation of their ropes. Sterling gives exact % elongation at 3 different weights for each diameter of HTP. I was given the run around for weeks from teufelburger/new...

End-for-end splice for pinto rig prusik

yup, just the regular class 1 double braid end for end. the only tricky part is that it's a bit difficult to have enough cover slack if you make the loop too small. Honestly I don't remember how much cordage I started with, but I think anything shorter than that would not work.

    Pulleysaver funk

Aha, you are sharp. I use a ring from a throwball and loop made out of throwline. Since the throwball ring is not a sphere it goes through the narrower cheekplates of the pinto rig, but is unable to go through the ring. Who wants to pay $5 for a tiny plastic ball anyway?

End-for-end splice for pinto rig prusik

Here's a photo of an 8mm ocean poly loop I made for my pulleysaver. 5 wraps keeps the pulley super close to the knot, just the way I like it.

    Fast forward pruning.

Surprised to say it, I'm with Daniel 100%. That was lame. Pinoaks drop limbs at maturity when they're pruned that way. Geez, can't believe I actually read this whole thread...

Old Growth Canopy Tour in Portland this August

Hey all, we've spent the past two days setting up the elevator system for the canopy tour, and it's coming together sweet! The lines go up two fir trees, each about 275' tall and 350 years old. Just uploaded some raw footage I shot today while rappelling the elevator line on the smaller of the...

    ISA 2012 conference

Hi Paul, The climbing comp is free and open to all; no registration is required there. If you register for the conference, you'll receive a name badge when you check in and you just keep that on you during the conference. As for the tree academy workshops, they can be found at...

    A Hippocratic Oath for Arboriculture?

Ummm, with all respect to Dr Moore (and I do mean this; I saw him speak in Sydney and was quite impressed) I think this misses the point entirely. As arborists we stand between humans and trees. Our job is find solutions to the inevitable conflicts that will arise when trees and humans occupy...

Old Growth Canopy Tour in Portland this August

Gerry, we did something similar at the 2010 PNW ISA conference, and we were able to comfortably run that system all day with 5 people to an hour. Having lots of volunteers was key, so the folks operating the system can focus on what they're doing and not need to worry about all the myriad other...

Old Growth Canopy Tour in Portland this August

Hi all, This August, in the days before the ITCC, Ascending the Giants and the PNW ISA are hosting a Forest Canopy Ecology Tour in a remarkable patch of old growth Douglas Fir minutes from downtown Portland. You can read a bunch about the program at http://pnwtreeclimb2012.eventbrite.com/ ...

    Leaning Delonix: slope and risk.

Can't seem to open the link. I've seen a lot of Delonix regia in Hong Kong with pretty serious leans, especially when they're in a grove. Generally they seem to deal with it well as long as the soil is not prone to failure...

I climbed a 210' douglasfir this weekend *DELETED*

Re: I climbed a 210\' douglasfir this weekend Dude if I were you I would be careful about posting photos of this sort of thing for everyone to see. It is against NPS rules to climb trees within national park boundaries except in a very few instances. Sorry to be such a killjoy, but this sort...

    MSA 160 C-BQ STIHL Lithium-Ion Chain Saw

10.8 lbs! That thing looks huge too, I wonder what the spec for dimensions is compared to a 200 or 190. Can you climb at all with it on your saddle? Seems too big and too heavy. Logan I doubt they'll switch to a bigger chain size, bigger chains need more energy to propel them through wood...
