Trump's Gestapo murdering an American citizen. Nice country y'all got there

I have to believe that a large majority of Americans are not OK with the cruelty, lawlessness, and utter insanity that Trump is inflicting on the US and the world. Will we the global community have the fortitude to truly stand up to this fucking madness, or will we curl up in a complacent ball of fear like Germany did in the 30's-40's?

You're already there, you've been there for 160 years. Your entire country has been build on fear. And fear of what most probably couldn't even say. For all the rah rah USA USA USA bullshit you're mostly a bunch of cowards who only care about their own bag.

I guess you missed the part where I mentioned the need for the global community to resit the madness Trump is inflicting around the world...But thanks for your very harsh generalization concerning the character of the American people..

Collectively you are right. Trump and his minions are a mirror of everything this country is and has been for a very long time.

I like to think that this is the death throes of an empire. Fingers crossed.

The irony of this statement coming from another former British colony that also has hundreds of bodies of brown and red people holding up it's foundation is pretty thick. I could write a five page response to this post, but I think the more succinct thing to say is that as we go, you go. Don't let this regime divide us. Being self-righteous feels great in the moment but you're not really doing anything. We're here having this conversation because we do not accept our government.

I guess you had a change of heart from your original reply.

The global community is doing what it can to appease the toddler, but don't expect anyone to come to help the people of the United States in it's internal affairs.

You may think it's a harsh generalization, but it's also engrained in your culture. There will always be pockets of individuals who rose above, but the undercurrents of American culture are what led you guys here.

I'm not sure what my location or colonialism or slavery has to do with what I said? It wasn't an attack on your history, it was an observation on your culture.

The regime has already divided us. Markets and economies are trying to shift away from being US centric. Visitors to your country have plummeted. This is a relationship that may not be fully restored in my lifetime. I don't think it's irreparably yet, but there's a lot more time for Trump to make things worse.

Also, the irony of pointing out me, a foreign national with zero influence over US domestic politics, for "not really doing anything". What have any of you done to help your country?

Personally I have opted to structure my business in ways that resist capitalism. My wife does meaningful work that affects the lives of literally thousands of US immigrants and poor working people, and lends her talents to combating legislation that takes away people's rights as human beings. Every day.

Stones and glass houses bro. Canada had segregated schools until 1983 for gawd sakes.

Against Black Canadians
  • Slavery: Chattel slavery was legal in the French and British colonies that became Canada for over 200 years. Enslaved people, both Indigenous and African, were considered property, their forced labour contributing to colonial prosperity. Slavery was abolished in 1834, but its legacy continued through segregation and systemic racism.
  • Segregation:Legal and informal racial segregation was pervasive in education, housing, employment, and public services.
    • Schools: Legally segregated schools existed in Nova Scotia and Ontario, with the last segregated school closing in Nova Scotia in 1983.
    • Public Life: Black individuals were denied service in hotels, restaurants, and theatres. Viola Desmond was famously arrested in 1946 for refusing to leave a whites-only section of a Nova Scotia movie theatre.
  • Discriminatory Immigration: The government actively discouraged Black immigration, including a 1911 Order-in-Council (though never officially enforced) to prohibit the entry of the "Negro race" deemed "unsuitable" for the climate.
  • Destruction of Communities: Historic Black communities, such as Africville in Halifax and Hogan's Alley in Vancouver, were forcibly razed by municipal governments in the mid-20th century due to intentional neglect and urban renewal projects.
Against Indigenous Peoples
  • Colonialism and Genocide: The foundation of Canada involved the colonization and dispossession of Indigenous lands, a process increasingly described as genocide due to associated forced displacement, violence, and compulsory assimilation programs.
  • Residential Schools: For over a century, Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families and placed in church-run, government-funded residential schools with the explicit goal of cultural eradication and assimilation into "white" society. Physical and sexual abuse was widespread, and many children died.
  • The Indian Act: Enacted in 1876 and still in force today, this legislation has been a primary tool for controlling Indigenous life, creating the reserve system, and imposing paternalistic government control over their lives and lands.
  • Forced Sterilization: Provinces like Alberta had eugenics policies, such as the Sexual Sterilization Act (repealed in 1972), which led to the forced sterilization of Indigenous and other marginalized women without their consent.

Against Asian Canadians
  • Chinese Head Tax and Exclusion Act: Starting in 1885, a race-based head tax was imposed on Chinese immigrants to deter their entry, followed by the Chinese Immigration Act, 1923 (the "Exclusion Act"), which banned almost all Chinese immigration until 1947.
  • Japanese Internment: During World War II, approximately 22,000 Japanese Canadians, many of whom were Canadian-born citizens, were forcibly removed from the West Coast and sent to internment camps. Their property and fishing boats were seized and sold by the government, often without compensation.
  • Komagata Maru Incident: In 1914, 376 Indian passengers, mostly Sikhs, were denied entry to Canada and forced to return to India due to restrictive "continuous journey" immigration regulations.
World War II Atrocities
  • Japanese Internment: In 1942, over 20,000 Japanese-Canadians—including those born in Canada—were forcibly moved to internment camps, and their properties were seized and never returned.
  • Exclusion of Jewish Refugees: In 1939, Canada famously refused entry to Jewish refugees on the MS St. Louis, leading many to perish in the Holocaust.

Yea I could list a bunch of American atrocities too. That wasn't my point and I'm not sure why it's getting brought up.

American culture is violence, greed, and individualism. Until that changes nothing in your country will change. Every country has it's domestic problems and histories, but some try to address them and others don't.

That's great! Truly.

And just like America Canada also continues with its atrocities in the name of greed and violence. Are doing anything about Canada's global mining industry (45%-50% of the worlds mining companies are headquartered in Canada ) while you sit on your moral high horse casting stones in your glass house. How about Canada's devastating tar sands mining? You fighting the good fight, or are you sitting back and allowing these atrocities to continue? Maybe your simply uninformed?

The reality is that just like America, Canada was founded on genocide, slavery, and greed. There is also Canada's culture concerning the massive extraction of Mother Earths resources and all the greed, exploitation, and devastation involved..

Wtf? Mining? I expected better from you man, but I see we're just going to start into whataboutism and deflecting. Comparing private corporations to governments is a stretch at best. Or are you saying corporations and governments are inseparable? So we stop our mining practices you'll take care of Trump? Is that the deal?

I'm fully aware that Canada's mining and oil industries are shit. They're shit everywhere. It's the consequences of raping the land.

But tell me. When has the Canadian government dispatched federal agents to patrol the streets terrorizing, kidnapping, and murdering? When did Canada abduct the head of a foreign country and extort it's natural resources? When did Canada upend the global economy because being the richest, most powerful nation on Earth wasn't quite enough? When did Canada start hinting at annexing sovereign nations or threaten them with violence if they don't fall in line?

Try harder next time.

I can see your still on your moral high horse while you sit in your glass house insulting your neighbors to the south by proclaiming that Americans are "mostly a bunch of cowards who only care about their own bag". If that weren't enough you proclaimed that American culture is violence, greed, and individualism. So essentially you are telling us that for the most part Americans are nothing more than greedy, violent, self serving cowards. Roger that?

You then went to all the way to the top rung of your moral high horse and questioned the morality of all the American members here with this fucking nonsense-

What have any of you done to help your country? In the spirit of pulling no punches you get a resounding FUCK OFF for that one bro..

What I was trying to accomplish in my last few posts was to simply trying to point out the FACT that your own nation has a long history of genocide, greed, violence, racism, exploitation, and environment devastation, and that much of it continues to this day. Have look at the rising rates of police violence in Canada? It ain't good. Have you taken a deep look at the violence, exploitation, havoc, and devastation the Canadian mining industry is inflicting on the world (much of it in poor and under developed nation)? Stones in glass houses homie..

So instead of bashing and insulting the millions and millions of good Americans who are doing their very best to resist this MAGA MADNESS maybe your time would be better spent cleaning up you own fucking back yard. Lord knows it could use it. And lord knows the good people of America could use some good thought and prayers as we truly fight for the future of your country and quite possibly the entire global community. The world is rightfully a little rattle right now, but we need to remember that if we stick together and stand up to the bullies we can win this fight...

I am vehemently opposed to the picture you are painting of the average American, but I hope you know that I have always enjoyed and valued your input here, and I will continue to do so in the future.

That is exactly what I'm saying. Not at an individual level, but as a nation, that is my observation.

I'll take that and await your reply outlining what you've actually done to resist Trump.

Stay on track here. Industry is not government. Otherwise we'd be having a whole different conversation. You keep pulling out all these strawmen. And I've owned that our history is far from perfect, but why did two neighbouring countries as intertwined as we are go down such divergent paths? The answer, at least to me, is the culture of the United States. Violence is accepted. Individualism is encouraged. Greed is expected. Not by all, but by enough that the status quo hasn't shown any signs of changing.

So we have to clean up our own back yard PLUS all the shit you're throwing over the fence? That's part of the problem too. The world is so busy dealing with your president, that domestic affairs have taken a hit.
I am vehemently opposed to the picture you are painting of the average American, but I hope you know that I have always enjoyed and valued your input here, and I will continue to do so in the future.
Friends can have disagreements.

And just to make it clear. In no way do I think I am morally superior to anyone here. Or anyone at all for that matter. Nor do I think Canada is a superior country to the US. Or any other country. I know I come off as an abrasive cunt, but I just want to see the best for people and when I see shit like what's happening down south I can get a little "passionate" about things and carried away with my words. I do stand by what I say, but I will tone it down or just shut up moving forward.

I will touch on your points-

#1- One could look at the genocidal, violent, greedy, racist history of Canada, add in your culture of extraction, and come to the conclusion that Canadians are generally a bunch of genocidal, violent, racist, snow loving heathens who in the name of greed are leaving a global wrath of environmental and social destruction in their wake...

#2. Really?

#3. Government and industry are always inextricably linked, and Canada is no different than the rest of the world.. Why do you think a majority of the mining companies on the planet are headquartered in Canada? Because your government has created a very pro mining environment and actually funds the industry to the tune of billion dollars a year. Hell, the tax incentives alone draw many extraction companies to Canada. Why do you think they are still clear cutting the old growth forest in BC? Because the Canadian government allows and encourages it. It wouldn't be a leap to say that your government, through its massive support of the extraction industries, is causing social and environmental disasters worldwide. You think capitalism and greed have anything to do with any of it? Canada was built on, around, and by the extraction industry. Why is that? Because the Canadian government has for decades and decades made is very easy for industries to extract oil, gas, minerals and timber for PROFIT.

I will let the violent history of Canadian speak as to whether violence is accepted in your country.

And I let the collusion between the Canadian government and the extraction industries speak to the expectation of greed in your country.

A few things are for sure. The US and Canada both have a history of horrific atrocities. The US and Canada are both currently involved in activities that seriously threaten the future of our planet and the future of the human race. Both the US and Canada will continue of this current trajectory for the forseeable future.

Seems we are that different after all...

#4. No one is asking Canada to clean up our mess, and no one is expecting you to do so. As a nation you clearly have your own shit and special kind of evil to deal with. I was personally asking you to refrain from using generalizations to bash and insult the million and millions of Americans who are in fact resisting and fighting this evil fascist takeover of our county. Fuck kicking someone when they are down!

#5. 100%. As I alluded to earlier, I consider you one of the good one boom. I know your heart is in the right place, and I would never hold that against anyone...

Wow. The republican led Senate actually stood up to the tyrant. It is mostly symbolic, but right now we will take a win no matter how small.
