New Ascender from Reg Coates

My reason for asking is that the big brands tend to buy for the lowest common denominator, and account for the majority of purchases from vsg. It’s by far the best way to sell the most if your device is easily integrated into a high churn culture. I feel silly even typing this, as I’m sure none of this is likely news to you.
Its not silly at all. The theory sounds plausible, but Im neither involved or informed in those matters. I deal with one Producr Engineer and that's it. We both make and send parts or samples back and forth. The business or sales side of things is not my domain.

I haven't climbed on Arborplex since the 1990's and never will again. Yes, it's great for natural crotch rigging, but honestly, I can't see any professional arborist, let alone someone who uses SRT/SRS Multicenders ever consider using it anymore for climbing. There are just better ropes out there.

I worked for a company earlier this year that provided a 16 strand climbing rope and tried to insist that I use it.

I have a nostalgic love for 16 strand, if it was a little more static I’d rock it for SRT and would be my go to rope
Having seen the abuse it can take, I would too, but I wouldn't mind if it was a bit less nubbly too.

I recently bought a little piece of Stein ATOL, a 9mm "16 strand" that has two carriers per strand, and a cross section that looks like a 24 strand, by which I mean a ~1:1 ratio of cover to core. I was hoping for something hard wearing, but it doesn't seem as rugged as I wanted it to be.

It’s all about the texture and ‘meat’…. At least it’s that way for me.

Have you had any personal experience with Tri Tec? That is hard wearing.

Cousins black widow is a modern 16 strand it’s a pretty solid line but does pick rather easy not so much from ascenders but locust thorns and the like. A lot of the line clearance contractors around here still issue out 1/2” 16 strand as the company line so while arborplex would be far from my choice I think the 16 strand 1/2” appeals to the “old boys” who want that beefy line and don’t trust the slimmer lines or find them harder on the hands/grip.
