Undercutting hung up trees

Single tie in too, in which case just spur down if not actually using a the climb line. I was taught to cut a slot in the top of a spar and ddrt down natty jagged crotch by one of my foremen, wicked smart and rope friendly.

bet that's especially great when it's oozing pitch

That’s what we did when I was coming up. Notch on top of the spar and DdRt with a good old tautline hitch while ALWAYS keeping your flipline around the tree.

If you watch a few of Veterans Tree Service vids you will notice that he seems to spend a majority of his time walking down in spurs as he pushes off rounds of firewood or really short logs. Learning how to use his system properly would certainly make his life more efficient, safer, and less painful. You can lead em to water, but.

Seems like a nice enough guy but I can’t help but cringe sometimes. Like you say, oh well. The hard part about youtube is any comment you make comes off like a clueless numbskull. At least here we all have a point of reference. Youtube is just blackhole into a cesspool, the comments anyway…

Yea. I did my best to gently steer him in the right direction on a couple issues.. All I got was a smart mouth and a fragile ego. Dude just wanted to know if I had a YouTube channel like that would somehow validate me. Living proof that a bunch of shiny gear, a custom Protos, and a YouTube channel do not make a great, or even good tree man.

Another vid by this young man. Go to the 22:30 mark and watch him pile drive his life support system into a hard packed asphalt driveway. Mercy! I tried to have a conversation with him about the error of his ways and appearantly this budding YouTube ArbStar has no idea how to setup a retrieval leg or the slightest notion of what a canopy anchor is. Its 2024 for gawd sakes. How it that even possible?

another tip i learned from watching that is you get the really cool shots by having the cameraman stand within five paces of the drop zone

Empty trucks make the loudest noise.

Ol’ Idaho logger taught me that. That, and how to SAW!

You insulted the dudes cutting right off the bat, what kind of response were you hoping for? Talk about ego jeeesh.

Insulted? Please. Should I have blown some smoke up the young man’s ass after he posted a vid of himself trying to force a dead top into another tree resulting in a hung up top? He gets enough of that from the YouTube peanut gallery, so instead I pointed out what he had done wrong and the dangers of having a hung up top sit in his lap. I also gave him some advice on better ways to handle that situation, and things to look out for. I ended this conversation with the following- "You are a talented young climber so keep on learning, honing your craft, and staying safe". That's about as sugar coated as this grumpy old man is gonna get..

Obviously he wasn't listening because a few vids later he chose the wrong cut and tried to stuff a top into a space it wouldn't fit. We all know the result of that error in judgement. Knocked off his spur as he ate a top in the chest.

Likewise with him pile driving his life support into the asphalt. Asked him if he knew how to set up a retrieval leg or use a canopy anchor.

A smallish tree sitting back on him which resulted in his saw and a set of wedges stuck in the tree? Told him the back-cut first method can work well on mild backleaners of this size.

Using a crow bar up in the tree because he pinched his saw so bad he couldn't get it out. Suggested he might want to learn the teeter totter with some wedges trick for situations like this.

Believe me when I say that I am genuinely concerned about this young mans safety, well being, and longevity because the rate at which he is making mistakes while also making things unnecessarily hard on himself is not sustainable. And believe me when I say that if I didn’t see talent in him I wouldn’t have bothered.

I only have a handful of videos on YT and a very small channel where I'm not trying to get famous because I'm not 20 years old and don't care... but the YT comments section is often such trash that it's hard to take any of it seriously. So I guess I understand his initial impulse to disregard your comments. That said, they all sound very reasonable given what I've seen as well and I agree with them. I mean, WHY would someone abuse their life-line like that? It's absurd and shows a general lack of care/safety overall. Not saying I'm perfect either, but that one is pretty egregious and extremely unnecessary.
