Today....

One of my closest friends lives in Grass Valley, and had a tree blow over and get hung up on his neighbors fence. IMG_20221210_194118.jpgIMG_20221210_194112.jpg20221211_165128.jpgI was able to get it safely on the ground in with no help at all, since he was with his infant and 6 year old while his lady was at work. Almost caught some sleet at the end, but I had it done just in time.

Not exactly tree work, but I made myself a nice axe pouch today

Man, Madrona are such stunning trees!
There is one on an undeveloped commercial property next to I-5 where I worked 12-14 years ago (not on the madrone, which the guy wanted removed before becoming potential protected). You wouldn't know how big it is from the interstate, 3 trunks, 3', 3', and 4' diameters. Huge!!

Across from the northbound Exit 107 exit ramp.

They really are, and a really iconic part of my region. Enjoyable to climb, but sometimes grow at extreme angles that make for some real challenges. This one was easy, and open enough to literally swing and jump between leaders which was great fun.
The lean on an understory madrona can be unreal.

A new term for me, when reading about madrona:
sclerophyll, type of vegetation characterized by hard, leathery, evergreen foliage that is specially adapted to prevent moisture loss.

Do the bags of firewood then get sold? Is this done in a woodyard? Must be, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a firewood bag. Nice rack.
We usually just use them to store split firewood and then dump them in our f550 for deliveries. They have loops on the bottom to help dump thrm into the truck. The bags hold 1/3 of a cord and cost about $15 EA. We have our own wood lot that our tree debris gets hauled to. We then process it into firewood or take good logs to be milled.

They are so gorgeous and distinctive to see in person. I traveled to Vancouver and Vancouver Island this summer and they were all over the place within a specific elevation.

Its been raining here for almost two weeks. Kinda makes it hard to do much tree work. While we have had some down time, we have been fixing on our stuff. We have a 2001 f550 with a dump bed. It's parking brake pedal wasnt holding. It kept skipping so I pulled it out of the truck to see what was going on with it. Unfortunately it has been discontinued and we cant find any new old stock. They seem to last two to three years so used if we can find isnt the greatest option. I think Im going to end up making a replacement gear. I knocked the heads off the rivets and pulled the pins out. O had to turn the spacer in my lathe so i could get a bolt through it to put it back together.

The bottom of the log is buried in mulch a bit, and is 'indented'.
