Today....

Bucking and skidding some Redwood logs this morning. 2 good size trees bucked up and skidded 7-8 nice 4+ footers up the hill.. Cornbread worked his ass off this morning.....Bigger stuff closer to the stump will have to wait until its a little drier around here.

Remember the pics I posted a bit ago about hack work in my neighborhood?

Here's the stump from the pin oak where I watched the guy drop the top on and break his ladder

That’s some advanced cutting techniques there, with that vertical bore cut, and lower relief cut, and double overshot back cut, didn’t you know that? And you say you’re a professional!

Today I took my new length of Poison Ivy for a maiden climb. It is 65' long with a spliced eye on one end and my intended use for it is either really short trees or cinched canopy anchor with quickie and alpine butterfly, with the need to climb up and attach a retrieval line to get it back down. First climb in my backyard Mulberry went great, retrieval line/bag worked perfectly. I used a Michoacan and wrench with short tether, with a 24" Beeline E2E and it ran really nice on the Ivy. Next I went to one of my favorite parks and decided to max out the length of the line so I set it up high in a Cottonwood the same way, cinched canopy anchor. There was only about 6" of rope left on the ground so I tied a stopper knot just to be safe. I climb up, attach my retrieval line, throw it down and see that it is still 10' above the ground(it was about 15' shorter than I thought it was, my bad!). On my way down I hooked my lanyard to the end of the retrieval line which gave me plenty enough length to get to the ground. While I'm patting myself on the back for solving one problem I made, I start pulling my retrieval line without remembering to remove the stopper knot from my rope(which obviously didn't make it thru the quickie) and no amount of flicking is getting that tail back down. So, I have a brand new piece of rope about 35' up in a tree right now. Gonna go back in the morning with another line and grab it but jeez what a bonehead move. What was designed to be a way to practice techniques turned into a lesson I will remember every time I use a canopy anchor with a short piece of rope. Don't forget to UNTIE THE STOPPER KNOT!20200517_192657.jpg
Bad lighting but this is a picture of that big fat double stopper knot that isn't going thru that quickie any time soon.

There is a snuff can, though.

I use an aiming fixture and make shallow vertical cuts on both sides of the trunk to mark the back end of the face cut. It helps me get the notch and hinge where I want them. Maybe the guy just made his marks deeper.

Just picked up this Euc job today.. I am really trying to talk them out of a removal and instead let us make it beautiful and safe...

Just started getting into this log this morning when I hit some serious metal...Utterly destroyed a brand new $275 blade... Mutherfucker!!!!!

Decided to do a little digging to find out what I had hit and see if I could proceed with milling. What I discovered I was a "spiked" log. Pulled a bunch of 3/8" x 12" spikes before I gave up.....Pure evil.IMG_2072.JPGIMG_2070.JPG
