Rope Wrench - Hitch/Rope compendium.

Is the biner on the other end of the e2e connected to something or just there for weight?

Something in the 2nd pic, just doesn't seem right. What type of setup is this? A semi-Blake's Hitch with a Rope Wrench? Why aren't both ends of the E2E attached to the HMS like a normal setup! Very confusing, as well as, unorthodox! But, if it works, so be it. I'm not sure that I would trust this for a reliable ascent. Call me crazy [emoji12]!

Just there in place of a stopper.

You don't have to play with a blake's under a wrench, but it works. I was just using what was on hand; I'm going to be trying it with a proper split tail on a proper (at least 11mm) rope this evening.

I think it was Drew Bristow that first ran a Blake's under a Wrench. I believe it allowed the tether to sit on one side of his HC Pulley and the Wrench on the other side. I'm not saying it will work for everyone, but it just might for some.

That being said, I don't think that 8mm hitch cord is good to hang on in straight pull config. I'd prefer a basket config, which was the entire premise behind the OT design. I feel the Michoacan, or "Closed Blake" performs best with a Rope Wrench, and personally can't see enough benefit to climbing on a Blake vs. the Michoacan. That's just me, though.

@SomethingWitty , I don't want to be a downer, bud. Universe knows I've tried my share of ideas! I love ideas and the innovation that can follow. Just thinking about safety, which always seems to come down to the threshold of the user.

Maybe hanging on a 10mm cord that's properly rated in a straight pull is OK. Best practice would be to look at all the ratings and be sure to stay in spec. based on the config.;)

@oceans; Thanks for posting that video, and for posting your expert analysis of the configuration. It's probably not a setup I would have tried anyway, but the consideration of "straight-pull" or "basket configuration" and the strength rating of the hitch cord probably would not have occurred to me.

I don't think I'd seen that video before. Seems like Drew stopped posting new stuff three or four years ago. I wonder what he's up to, now.

Cool video. I was wondering how nobody had tried what is possibly the most popular friction hitch on the planet right now. Apparently it was a thing.

I know. I commented on the e2e not being made for that. I already had my 10mm access line set... with no retrieval. At a good tie in point. In a thick water oak.
New string/no real work abuse/single ascent.
I was sure I would be fine... I've been known to use some things rated far less than 5400 for life when they are brand new. (Quarter inch tenex lanyard fits in your pocket)
I like safety concerns being voiced. I might not always think of everything, and the same goes for people who see the dumb stuff that I try.

Drew is definitely around at ExploreTrees.com. They post heaps online. They've posted a few SRT related anchor vids a while ago - mostly posts are about their environmental work involving tree climbing and rope access. Really cool stuff about making our planet a happy place.

The SRT traverse vid posted about really inspired me when I started... heck, it still does, and I was over the moon that it was shot local by a local person. Until then most tree climbing I'd seen was from overseas.

I'll head back to regular programming now....this thread has reminded me to play with a distel and knut again with the wrench. Been flying the XT or michoacan for a while. Nice to mix it up.

@WaitakKauri; So, what do you think of the Michoacan hitch? I still haven't tried it, but the folks that write about it seem to think it's about the best thing going. Maybe you would not mind sharing your impressions of it, so far? Thanks in advance for your time.

Tim

Edit: Thanks also for the great update about Drew Bristow. Much appreciated.

@TimBr don't give up on it right away! It can be finicky. Play with the amount of wraps overall, and/or the amount of wraps you cross under with the tail! It doesn't seem to matter for me the dia of cord or rope.. it's more about the way the hitch itself is fashioned. Lemme know how ya make out, killer!

Been out all day since posting... the buzz never sleeps or stops :rebotando:... lots of good stuff posted. :)

I like a 5-1 michoacan (for my ropes, hitch cord & weight) and I keep it compact below the RW. I get a nice balance of good bite without excess drag. Compact is good for TCC judges. I can run hitches a bit longer on the zk1 RW.

Also, I tie it, then rotate it. Hearing the HC is favoured with the RW around here brought my attention to this. The HC keeps rope away from dragging on the tether and rotating a compact michoacan accomplished the same.

Tethers seem to be trending thicker so this might be something to watch. I've melted a bit of tether plastic a few times

Many ways around that....a VT with the last braid between the tether and rope clears this issue up...I love a michoacan on DdRT but never on a wrench...now I just use a 3/3 VT...CT pulley...don't wrench these days those it is very dusty...runners all day...
