Yet another chip truck build

View attachment 42857 Here's a one listed today
DTS. What are the walls made of ? How are they attached ?
I have a dumping deck and I am about to build walls.. Thinking of square steel tubing in the stake pockets and plywood. Wondering about attaching the walls to the deck. Do I bolt the steel tubes through the pockets to make it reversible or weld them and grind if I want to remove the walls. ( for resale )
Just curious how yours is done. Thanks.

Not sure truck was posted yesterday on Hudson Valley NY craigslist put it on the buzz in case some one was interested in truck. has more details on CL.

Well my truck is finally here in NY. Arrived today and is spending the night on the trailer, at the towing company's lot. In the morning I meat him at my buddies shop where the build will begin. I'll snap a couple pics and post them tomorrow after I figure out how. I'm still learning everyday. :D
I stopped and looked at the dump I had in mind and might pass on it. I'll take pics of that also. I've located a couple more choices of bodies and will look at those. One more place I'll stop and scour is an old farm with a ton of trucks visible from the road. If I see any there .... more pics. So botom line ... lots of pics coming soon.

Okay so truck is at the shop and I snapped a few pics. I also stopped at the first body and took pics but only two came out well due to the sun in my face. I looked at two more bodies. One was an old grain body with metal side and barn door. Full of debris and under a LARGE popular tree. I look underneath and see rotted cross members and punky wood decking with water dripping through. NEXT ..... a 13.5' with telescoping ram w/o a dog house. Looks solid and pump may even work.
Guy wants $1200 for it. Going back in the morning to do some final math on the hinge placement and axle placement ratio. This body has the hinges set back 12''s. I wanted to cut of the cab protector but my builder is trying to convince me to leave it on since I want a removable top. Accidents happen and if something happens while loading from above it might save my cab. Also thinking about the gate. I want the dual barn doors but I like the swing or barn door combo for the bigger tandems. Nice to pull up hit the air gate for swing dumping on other dumping purposes. Then again when I want to load a barrel of rakeings I want to open half a door ...

Scrap the last body listed. My buddy is advising to go a different route. The hunt continues. I've checked a half dozen or so local yards and I'm out of places to search. At least off the top of my head.

Pics?

Yesterday evening I settled on a 20'? steel flatbed. I'll be shortening to 14' and building new walls with a removable steel top. Unless I get a bug in my ass and splurge for an aluminum top. I don't want to spend the coin for the aluminum but it'd be nice to keep it light weight. Today I have to go back to one of the yards and check on a ram and scissor assembly. Total of 2gs for the bed, pump, and ram. This is going to cost me a little more than I wanted to spend. At least I am building a body to fit the truck and not changing the truck to fit the dump. One thing I kinda don't like is the floor is steel over oak. Down the road when it rots out I'll have to add to the cross members to keep the floor from bellying down.
Thinking of trying to seal off the under body with coating. Any thoughts? Wondering if this might actually accelerate the decaying process? I'm sure the wood will still experience moisture and I don't want to trap it. I think it may be white oak. Least I hope so over red oak.

Anyone have any opinions on this?

You are right the wood will decay and leave a space which could be a hassle in the long run. With steel on top I would be suspicious that the wood already has holes in it, or why would they have covered it. Might be worth, while it's off the truck, pulling the steel off and getting rid of the wood and putting it back together with the supports needed. This way you can flip it around with equipment to best suit your needs to tear it down. It's always much easier to weld under yourself rather than over head. Unless you have a fetish for hot embers down your shirt. :rebotando::descansando:
