yard signs

[ QUOTE ]
We don't, but I make a habit of picking up the competitors signs and throwing them in the woods.

When you take something that does not belong to you with out the owners permission I believe its called STEALING.

[ QUOTE ]
To be perfectly honest with you, I think the signs are a form of littering. Post it on the property, or after I come by and throw in the woods, its littering either way. Its a cheap and cheeseball way to advertise and I am tired of ALL the contractor signs that LITTER EVERY property you drive by. Obviously these are the people that cant survive on referrals and find it necessary to litter the community with their garbage.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm glad you were perfectly honest with me. So lemme get this straight... in you're neighborhood you take as you're right to trash anybody else's property if it simply doesn't suit your personal sensibility?

Ya know, those overhead powerlines are kinda trashy too... and YOU have a chainsaw.

I'm curious, do you toss EVERY yard sign in the woods? Landscapers, politicians, summer camps, funerals, etc... or is it just tree services.

Now to put one at a half million dollar home, I think thats tacky. But to put a sign up at an average house on a busy street why not? When you have over a hundred tree co's in this one county, any extra competitive edge can only help.

Familytree, I surprised you havn't chimed in on this topic. Every time I turn around it seems I pass by one of your boss's signs.

At one time I thought about having some corrugated plastic signs to leave at client's houses for advertising. My idea was to leave something that said 'Trees pruned by....blah blah blah" and leave my phone/email to solicit an estimate. The signs would never be placed on poles or in vacant yards. That sort of advertising is litter.

I've seen some pretty nice signs on mult-imillion dollar homes for everything from GCs to architects and landscapers. If the client is happy with your work and the sign is tasteful go for it. The truck has got to be the best advertising in itself. Nice big sign with an easy to read phone number.

A direct mailer to an existing client base is a great tool if it's personally addressed and not sent bulk mail. Put the effort into it and it will pay in spades. Another tool is cold calling. Did this with golf courses within an hours travel time. Once again paid for the time involved with plenty of work the first year and going forward from there.

While referrals are great when times are good, remember you are placing the success of your business in another's hands.

If it's growth you want then smart advertising is a must.

The big difference is that you need permission from the land/homeowner to post the sign on their property.

[/ QUOTE ]

You are absolutely right.

We have that built into our contracts. The customer allows us to post a sign, like a realestate or political size on thier yard, near a public right of way.

They agree to leave it up for 14 days and give it back to us when we come back to get it.

This does a couple of things, first they are expensive signs, second, they know we will be back to get it so they don't worry about us putting it up.

We find that many neighbors will come home and see that "Bill Jones" had tree work and wonder who did the work.

Such sight-reference customers represent nearly 1/3 of all our new customers.

Also, when they see your sign as well as your ad in thier local paper they respond that much quicker.

Sort of a familiarity thing.

We were given a bunch of steel sign frames that were from a real estate agent and I was planning to have new sheet metal sheered for them but I may use the corrugated plastic idea. The idea was exactly as rfwoodvt mentioned above, neighbors come home and wonder who did the work...if the sign is there they know who did it.

we put a sign of every job we do, like cam said, its hard not to see my boss' signs, we have so many out there because there is no such thing as a job too small, its like getting paid to advertise on the streets, even if the job is only 100 bucks at least you get to stick your sign out front and possibly get a much larger job because of it

cam, we have noticed our signs getting yanked as well, we should meet up and start a militia here in south jersey, although they arent exactly my signs but maybe if i save enough of them ill get the coveted "raise" i hear so much about. ive seen allseasons and white horse kick down others signs while i was driving down the road but that about fits the bill with there MO from what ive heard at least

I don't see the problem with it, as long as the home owner permits it. Can't be anything wrong with that. Can there?

I've see a couple of my competitors yard signs. One guy had his in a residential yard, the other was on city property (without the city's permission). I have nothing wrong with the first guy's approach.

I've considered them. But, it looks like I might be a victim of theft or vandalism for simply wanting to get my name out.

I have a good one for ya. I did a job about a 1/2 mile from another tree co I also do work for. I had put out a sign on the busy road. Later that day I get an ear full from the guy that he felt the sign was on his home turf. I thought he was kidding, but quickly realized the seriousness of him not letting up about it. So not to ruffle any feathers I went and took the sign down. I thought I was far enough away from his home base, but guess I must have over stepped my boundaries.

P.S. Familytree, let me know if you drop by, gives me enough time to cover up all of Rys signs I got here.

Wow. So, it may be possible to establish territories with these things?

J/K. What will be next? Tree service companies flashing gang signs symbolizing their company logo to each other? Shootings?

I can't believe that guy got territorial.

all seasons and a cut above had at it over at eds rental the other day because of similar circumstances, as far as you having rys signs, if you drive around a bit you will probably find another 20-30 of them, weve been hustlin

if someone yells at me for my sign being too close to his shop, he will get all of about 3 words out of his mouth til i fill it with my fist, ive fought for much less in my lifetime, my work ethic and quality of work belong to me and me alone, and ill be damned if someone yells at me for doing better work then they do, thats why i got the job to begin with, if that happens again cam, just call on the south jersey militia

Hahaha. Did any of ya'll see that Soprano's episode? The one with the tree trimmer?

The landscape lawn guy being belayed from the ground?

Didnt Paulie smuck him with a shovel and he dropped his belay, sending the "climber" to the ground?

This has gone from very informative to down right comical!

Hey family,

You would make a good bill collector!

If the tree thing does'nt work you,

you got a good back up career.

hahaha, thanks jim but im not exactly physically intimidateing, i just stand up for what i believe in, obivously cameron couldnt take a swing or even argue with the guy because he was a "customer" of sorts. we have a lot of scumbag tree companies around here that look to start trouble, i usually stay clear of most of it
