The two that I built had a spring loaded gate valve. The whole thing cost about $100 each and some shop time. They worked almost as well as the manufactured one that I borrowed. So close that the savings were very sweet!
The link to the valve distributor is at the end of the thread.
All black iron pipe...the nozzle is made from a 3/4---> 1/4 reducer and a 4" nipple. The size could be experimented with.
The hand brake mechanism and lever that actuates the ball on the valve are from an old style side-pull bicycle brake.
Its key to get the cable alignment right for the whole 'throw' of the lever. One of the units worked great...the other wasn't quite right and the pull on the handle wasn't real smooth.
having the handle up like that keeps the operators hand from toasting. The friction of the air moving through the pipe will make it hot quick!
Like I said...a quarter turn valve is much cheaper but not as safe.
What would you say is the smallest compressor that would work for a HS!
Looking to do this on a budget of course. This isn't something I would use daily or even weekly. But a great tool to have. And would open doors for future jobs.
I think there are pics in the original thread. If not...just make the tube about 48", you can cut it down and have it rethreaded at the hardware store if its uncomfortable. This is lo tech but efficient!
