Worm gearboxon altec boom

Yeah, I was thinking inside the gearbox until the OP said the piece fell out. I knew that wouldn't happen.

I'd bet a really good welder could fill in the missing portion of the tooth, grind it to the proper contour, and you'd be back in business. He might want the shaft and gear removed from the gearbox, though. He's going to have to preheat the gear to get a good weld, and that might mess up the shaft seal. I doubt the gear can be removed from the shaft.

Gears like that have fairly large contact surfaces, but only a small portion is touching as the surfaces roll together. You really need all of the tooth there for it to work correctly.

On a plus side, straight cut gears are much easier to make if you end up going that route.
Altec is telling me its one whole unit and u can't remove the gear as I said I haven't gotten it off yet until I make some calls and decide what route I'm taking and need a truck for chipping at least so its going to have to be a quick ordeal

Sounds like you've seen the break, but just can't get a pic while it's assembled? I'm hoping the gear it matches to is in good shape and it'll be an easy repair. Attached is the picture of my gear box. This truck is out of commission and I still have the gear box. It's highly unlikely that it'll be the same gear, but I have one available if it is.
Our truck is a gmc c7500 topkick and altec lvr 50' I really don't know too much about these so idk if u can jnterchamge them or not. What is the gearbox out of

I was wondering the same we have a guy hes hard to track down but does all of our welding I may ask him if he thinks it's possible even to just get by until I can get the part here

Posted it in the wrong spot but its the big gear on the gearbox that turns the bull gear idk the technical name for it all altec would tell me is its a worm gearbox
My apologies, I looked back through your other pictures and now I see what you mean. I thought the worm gear engaged the ring gear directly on that truck, but I was mistaken. That straight cut gear should not be that hard to have manufactured (and possibly could even be repaired?) by a really good machine shop.

Same truck, but a different lift (hi-ranger) The pic that I posted is old, that gearbox housing is no longer any good, but if the gear is removable and the same size you could swap gears.

Ok well after I make some calls tomorrow I should know more and have time to mess with it and will try to figure out if I can take it apart or if its one piece and let u know or see if I can swap it out and let u know
