working through bursitis

thought I had a spider bite on my elbow this morning... Puffy, red, swollen, and painful to touch. Nope, it's bursitis. Lucky me!
Tomorrow I have a few trees to remove, the job has to be done inside Friday and Saturday. Any down and dirty home remedies? I am taking advil, putting on ice, elevating, and using an ace bandage...

I've heard that cheap veterinary grade soluble DMSO for horses works good for relieving elbow inflammation in people just like it does in horses.

I think they have it in nutrition stores labeled for use in people too, but it's much more expensive.

A few old climbers have told me about it now that suffer from arthritis related ailments.

I haven't tried it myself yet, but it won't be for much longer I'm afraid!

But like the commercials say, "Check with your doctor first".

I have the same thing and I'm just a young pup. Mine is in my shoulder though. I get cortizone shots ever so often and have stretches and exercises I do.

Bee sting right on the affected area. Assuming you are NOT allergic to bee venom. Also works great for arthritis. The AMA doesn't like to hear this though.

I am somewhat leery of roids and the like.Cortisone is a dead end!! Ice the affected area , some nsaids like Motrin.when your done rest it. I have a shoulder with it. Flairs up sometimes. A lot less since Tai chi.Even certain foods cause an inflammatory response from your body! Ya need a holistic approach.

Paul, I agree. I have had it in my right shoulder a few times, but its cleared up. They did not give me any shots (unlike my elbows), but sent me to PT instead. It worked, but you have to do the exercises.

I really do want to start Tai chi and some form of yoga too, but need to find good instruction first.

DMSO does help. I have used it for years. It can be found at feed stores and western stores that sell horse supplies. It is sold as a solvent because here in the states it has no FDA label for human use like it has in Canada.
It relieves pain almost immediately in some cases and takes time in others. It creates a garlic taste in your mouth and if you rub it too hard while applying it will get pretty hot.
It is used on horses allot to carry something else to the affected area, cortisone, etc. Because of it's penetrating nature it is important that the area be clean when you use it.
The combination of DMSO, ice, and Advil is a really good non prescription way to lower inflammation. This and massage has helped me thru some pretty messed up knees and stuff.
Hope this answered some of your questions.

Thanks for all the advice.
I saw a doctor on Thursday and he prescribed a week of Sulfa-antibiotics, and that seemed to help a lot. It's still a little puffy and kind of warm, but the majority of symptoms disappeared.
While rigging a tree down this weekend, I ripped the fascicle sheath on the back of my left hand, according to the physical therapist who lived across the street and looked at it. It was stiff and painful, and it swelled up so much I couldn't get my glove on and off. Today I look like Mickey Mouse, a big balloon hand. The PT said ice it and rest it, take ibuprofen and the symptoms will fade...
Just wasn't my week!
