working SRT

I can't bring myself to admit I'm a Geezer quite yet.

At 40 we all become Geezers...in this context anyway

Any word on SRT being aloud in the ITCC this year.

Yesterday Dan Stevens and I shot some video of the wrench and he is subbmitting it as we speak in hopes of getting it approved for ITCC.

I did 5 minute work climb on it after using it for 2 months.
He did it in 3 on his 1st time out....That is why he is Dan Stevens

First comp. I flew the 12 strand arborplex, steel snap with the tautline, chinstrap w/Mass electric hardhat. I threw that snap at the rescue dummy. Comps have improved my gear, climbing and skills.

The Rig isn't a system, its a component.

Unless I've missed something there has never been any sort of explanation of the criteria used to accept or reject gear or systems.

A lot of things I suppose. My guess would be testing, a track record from use in other disciplines I would guess, insurance. Just a few things I can think of. I, by no means , am an authority. So I'm just guessing. My experience has not been in the realm of trying to get some tool or technique approved for a comp. I have several tool prototypes that I've been working on for at least 4 yrs to get to the point of production. There are countless things to consider for that to happen. Mostly financial things. If and when it happens ,I don't expect to make much. But I do see the need for what I have come up with. So I press on.

All good points of course.

Seeing what sort of things have been approved on the fly or with a moments notice in the ITCC in the past shows that innovation has been encouraged even without a whole lot of testing or acceptance.

Most change is incremental...but it still scares some people. Look at how many people still only climb on a tautline and will have nothing to do with any new-fangled knot, much less a hitch tied with 'little rope'!

The Rig and the I'd are allowed in comps as petzl has documented that they are safe for working on a single line (according to Mark Bridge at the ETTC, they sent a note on this about 4 weeks ago, dont think its been published yet). No other single line device has this kind of documentation so far (including the the rope wrench and the uni).

My suggestion would be for Kevin, that if its to big a cost to get the sertification by oneself, try working/selling to a bigger ropeacess company. Just imagine the rope wrench in a smooth blue mettalic DMM look...

(gotta clean som dribble of the keyboard now)

It's good to know there's a piece of gear that the ITCC sees fit to work SRT with. But the Rig...really? I see this tool as a great descent device and ground anchor but it comes up short when ascending vertical rope and generally working throughout the tree.
Just because it's the go to tool for other rope access occupations doesn't make it the ideal tool for tree work.
