working SRT

Actually, I think it's Petzl that says that the Rig is fit for use in tree climbing SRT work positioning. Would'nt it be great if someone would come up with the ultimate SRT ascent/descent work positioning tool, that was tested and documented as appropriate for use in a comp. But in the grand scheme of things, comps are a day or two, here or there. Workdays are more important.

What criteria or standard would the device need to meet?

That criteria would have to apply to DdRT too.

In order for the ITCC tech team to consider the use of a device I understand that a qualifying competitor has to submit it, right?

Since I'm not a qualified competitor I guess that I don't have the standing necessary to submit the Unicender for their blessing.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure what your qualification has to be. I'm not part of the ITCC. But I would suggest that whomever the manufacturer of the Unicender is, that they would submit their testing documentation to the proper folks at ITCC. That would be my guess anyway. I'm assuming of course that Petzl, as the manufacturer of the Rig, in giving their blessing for the use of it as a SRT work positioning tool for tree climbing, has the documented testing. And that they made it available. The folks there would certainly know what testing criteria needs to be met.

Hi Guys,
It is true that Petzl have issued a statement in regards to the Rig and ID being used without type A backup.
This statement does not however allow deviation from the correct use of the equipment,The rig/ID must always be used with two hands. This can be difficult if it used for movement within the crown especially in a workclimb situation.Failure to use the correct control method on the equipment will ultimately result in a DQ

Well the triple action is talked about in 2.2.10 but only carabinas are mentioned
Though 2.2.12 could be an issue " No quick release meechanisms !!!!!!

That was good thinking I hadn't actually thought about it until now

Kevin – I am letting you know that the ITCC Operations Committee will not be allowing the Rope Wrench at the 2012 ITCC in Portland.

The decision is based on the following:

-The information you submitted missed the deadline of June 29th that was provided to all competitors in the ITCC invitation letter. Emails were submitted over the course of 2-days on June 30 and August 1st.

-The Technical Committee did receive the information that was forwarded; however, despite the large amount of data submitted, a number of key items that were originally requested by the TAC were still missing. Therefore, the TAC feels it is unable to make a founded decision in regards to the safety of the system prior to the ITCC.

The TAC has been tasked by ISA leadership and the ITCC Operations Committee to assess whether systems, assemblies or components meet industry standards and are suitable to be used at the TCCs. In regards to the Rope Wrench submission, this has not yet proved possible for them to assess, therefore the Operations Committee cannot allow it at this year’s competition.

Thank you and see you next week in Portland.

Petzl's statement (below & attached) looks pretty simple...

It is just a letter that in a nutshell says tree climbers typically do things differently and the standards aren't really relevant. The product was not originally designed to be used this way, the devices known hazards are documented elsewhere, but thats all cool as long as you way up the risk yourself and know what you're doing!

It should not be too hard for Singing Tree to provide a similar letter...but would it be accepted???

To: whom it may concern
Tree care techniques are not always covered by EN standards. Globally , Tree care techniques do not use a back up solution (back up rope + device) while evolving in a tree with the “prussic & pulley” techniques. Note also that EN 12841 standard for its part has been created for rope access in “industrial environments”.
Petzl RIG and Petzl ID have been designed and tested to abseil on one single rope as described in their technical notice. The known to date hazards in use of the Petzl RIG and Petzl ID are described in the technical notice and in the Product Experience available on www.petzl.com .
Petzl RIG and Petzl ID can be used for abseiling with or without a back up solution , as long as the user take in consideration in his own risk analysis these known hazards of the Petzl RIG and the Petzl ID , plus all the other hazards in relation with abseiling and all the other hazards of his specific uses.
Sincerely
B.Bressoux
